One prominent Soros-related conspiracy theory is that he is behind the European migrant crisis or importing migrants to European countries. Under the current second premiership of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian government has spent millions of dollars on a poster campaign demonizing Soros. According to anthropologist Ivan Kalmar, "[m]any of his most outspoken enemies inside and outside Hungary saw him as leading an international cabal that included other Jews such as the Rothschilds, as well as Freemasons and Illuminati."{{Cite book |last=Langer |first=Armin |title=Europe: Continent of Conspiracies |date=2021 |publisher=Routledge |isbn=978-1-003-04864-0 |chapter=The eternal George Soros: The rise of an antisemitic and Islamophobic conspiracy theory}}{{Cite journal |last=Kalmar |first=Ivan |date=2020 |title=Islamophobia and anti-antisemitism: the case of Hungary and the 'Soros plot' |journal=Patterns of Prejudice |volume=54 |issue=1–2 |pages=182–198 |doi=10.1080/0031322X.2019.1705014 |s2cid=219021241}}

Soros has become a magnet for such theories, with opponents claiming he is behind such diverse events as the 2017 Women's March, the fact-checking website Snopes, the gun-control activism engaged in by the survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting,{{Cite news |last=Rynbaum |first=Michael M. |date=February 20, 2018 |title=Right-Wing Media Uses Parkland Shooting as Conspiracy Fodder |work=The New York Times |url=https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/02/20/business/media/parkland-shooting-media-conspiracy.html |url-status=live |access-date=March 3, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180303100955/https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/02/20/business/media/parkland-shooting-media-conspiracy.html |archive-date=March 3, 2018}}{{Cite web |last1=Brown |first1=Jennings |last2=Steinblatt |first2=Jacob |date=March 30, 2017 |title=How George Soros Became The Right's Biggest Boogeyman |url=http://www.vocativ.com/412237/george-soros-right-boogeyman/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180223001736/http://www.vocativ.com/412237/george-soros-right-boogeyman/ |archive-date=February 23, 2018 |access-date=March 3, 2018 |website=www.vocativ.com |publisher=Vocativ}}{{Cite news |last=Streitfeld |first=David |date=December 25, 2016 |title=For Fact Checking Website Snopes, a Bigger Role Brings More Attacks |work=The New York Times |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/25/technology/for-fact-checking-website-snopes-a-bigger-role-brings-more-attacks.html |url-status=live |access-date=December 27, 2016 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161227075308/http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/25/technology/for-fact-checking-website-snopes-a-bigger-role-brings-more-attacks.html |archive-date=December 27, 2016}} the October 2018 Central American immigrant caravans, and protests against the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination.{{Cite news |last=Rizzo |first=Salvador |date=October 5, 2018 |title=No, George Soros isn't paying Kavanaugh protesters |newspaper=The Washington Post |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/10/05/no-george-soros-isnt-paying-kavanaugh-protesters/ |url-status=live |access-date=October 6, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181006001842/https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/10/05/no-george-soros-isnt-paying-kavanaugh-protesters/ |archive-date=October 6, 2018}} In a tweet, President Donald Trump also claimed Soros was backing the protests against Kavanaugh's nomination.{{Cite news |last=Jamieson |first=Amber |date=October 6, 2018 |title=Trump's Lawyer Retweeted That 'Anti-Christ' George Soros Is Funding Anti-Kavanaugh Protests |work=Buzzfeed News |url=https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/amberjamieson/giuliani-twitter-soros |url-status=live |access-date=October 6, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181006182600/https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/amberjamieson/giuliani-twitter-soros |archive-date=October 6, 2018}}

American conservatives picked up on the thread in the late 2000s, spearheaded by Fox News. Bill O'Reilly gave an almost ten-minute monologue on Soros in 2007, calling him an "extremist" and claiming he was "off-the-charts dangerous."

1990s

Anthropologist Ivan Kalmar writes that it is "not clear where the Soros Myth began... A likely candidate for the dubious honour of originating it is the Executive Intelligence Review, founded by the far-right American commentator Lyndon LaRouche. An article in the 1 November 1996 edition accuses the financier of manipulating the world’s finances in partnership with the Rothschilds, who 'launched Soros's career{{' "}}, citing a piece by writer F. William Engdahl.{{cite journal | last=Kalmar | first=Ivan | title=Islamophobia and anti-antisemitism: the case of Hungary and the ‘Soros plot’ | journal=Patterns of Prejudice | volume=54 | issue=1-2 | date=14 March 2020 | issn=0031-322X | doi=10.1080/0031322X.2019.1705014 | pages=182–198}} Similarly, author Michael Wohlraich identifies Engdahl as the first US populariser of Soros conspiracy theories, noting the same text.{{cite book | last=Wolraich | first=Michael | title=Blowing smoke: why the right keeps serving up whack-job fantasies about the plot to euthanize grandma, outlaw Christmas, and turn junior into a raging homosexual | publisher=Da Capo Press | publication-place=Cambridge, Mass | year=2010 | isbn=978-0-306-81937-7 | oclc=668208755 }} This has been described by the anti-fascist group Unicorn Riot as "an example of the anti-Semitic "rootless cosmopolitan" trope.{{cite web | title="Eat the Children": Decades of Far-Right LaRouche Provocations Renewed | website=UNICORN RIOT | date=2019-10-05 | url=https://unicornriot.ninja/2019/eat-the-children-decades-of-far-right-larouche-provocations-renewed/ | access-date=2021-07-09}}

In 1997, during the Asian financial crisis, the prime minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, accused Soros of using the wealth under his control to punish the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for welcoming Myanmar as a member. With a history of antisemitic remarks, Mahathir made specific reference to Soros's Jewish background ("It is a Jew who triggered the currency plunge"),{{Cite news |date=October 24, 2003 |title=Mahathir's dark side |work=The Daily Telegraph |location=London |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/telegraph-view/3597972/Mahathirs-dark-side.html |url-status=live |access-date=April 5, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180421180307/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/telegraph-view/3597972/Mahathirs-dark-side.html |archive-date=April 21, 2018}} and implied Soros was orchestrating the crash as part of a larger Jewish conspiracy. Nine years later, in 2006, Mahathir met with Soros and afterward stated that he accepted that Soros had not been responsible for the crisis.[https://web.archive.org/web/20070111172941/http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200612/s1812946.htm "Malaysian ex-premier Mahathir and billionaire Soros end feud"]. ABC News. Agence France-Presse. December 15, 2006. In 1998's The Crisis of Global Capitalism: Open Society Endangered, Soros explained his role in the crisis as follows:

The financial crisis that originated in Thailand in 1997 was particularly unnerving because of its scope and severity ... By the beginning of 1997, it was clear to Soros Fund Management that the discrepancy between the trade account and the capital account was becoming untenable. We sold short the Thai baht and the Malaysian ringgit early in 1997 with maturities ranging from six months to a year. (That is, we entered into contracts to deliver at future dates Thai baht and Malaysian ringgit that we did not currently hold.) Subsequently, Prime Minister Mahathir of Malaysia accused me of causing the crisis, a wholly unfounded accusation. We were not sellers of the currency during or several months before the crisis; on the contrary, we were buyers when the currencies began to decline—we were purchasing ringgits to realize the profits on our earlier speculation. (Much too soon, as it turned out. We left most of the potential gain on the table because we were afraid that Mahathir would impose capital controls. He did so, but much later.)Soros, George (1999).
