Nélson Gil de Almeida Gomes (born 2 December 1972) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a forward.

Football career

Born in Luanda, Portuguese Angola, Gomes moved to Portugal at a young age, joining S.L. Benfica's youth system at the age of 14. He excelled at the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship with the Portugal under-20 team, scoring one goal in five matches as the tournament ended in victory.{{cite news|url=https://www.dn.pt/desporto/seleccao/interior/geracao-de-ouro-faz-20-anos-1956505.html|title=Geração de ouro faz 20 anos|trans-title=Golden generation celebrates 20th birthday|newspaper=Diário de Notícias|first=Ireneu|last=Ribeiro|language=Portuguese|date=20 August 2011|accessdate=2 August 2016}} At senior level, however, his Primeira Liga input consisted of 30 games over two seasons, not being able to find the net with S.C. Braga and C.F. Estrela da Amadora.{{cite news|url=https://www.record.pt/internacional/detalhe/gil-sair-do-benfica-foi-o-unico-erro-da-minha-carreira|title=Gil: «Sair do Benfica foi o único erro da minha carreira»|trans-title=Gil: "To leave Benfica was the only mistake of my career"|newspaper=Record|language=Portuguese|date=24 February 2001|accessdate=27 October 2023}}

After leaving his adopted nation in 1995 and until his retirement ten years later – he had already had a spell abroad with French club Tours FC – Gomes played all but exclusively in lower league and amateur football. In his last six seasons he competed in England, representing Welwitchia, Hendon, Middlewich Town, Salford City, Hyde United and New East Manchester.{{cite web|url=http://avellino-calcio.it/nelson-gil-gomes-dal-mondiale-giocato-con-figo-e-rui-costa-avellino|title=Nelson Gil Gomes: Dal Mondiale, giocato con Figo e Rui Costa, all'Avellino|trans-title=Nelson Gil Gomes: From the World Cup, played with Figo and Rui Costa, to Avellino|publisher=Avellino Calcio|language=Italian|date=|accessdate=13 June 2015}}
