Etymology and history
The word "quadrobics" is a portmanteau of the words "quattuor" (Latin for "four") and "aerobics". Quadrobics began as a sports hobby and over time turned into a trend that started to take over social networks.{{cite web|url=https://www.mlg.ru/blog/viral_smm/issledovanie-chem-otlichayutsya-kvadrobery-ot-furri-i-kak-oni-vzorvali-sotsseti/|title=Исследование: чем отличаются квадроберы от фурри, и как они взорвали соцсети|publisher=RBK|date=10 October 2024|accessdate=3 December 2024|language=ru}} It is said to have been invented by Japanese sprinter Kenichi Ito, who in 2008 set the world record for running the 100-m track on all four limbs. Quadrobists are often confused with furries, but there are differences. Quadrobists focus on imitating real animals, while furries role-play anthropomorphic animal characters (thus creating so-called fursonas, a portmanteau of "fur" and "persona").
The difference between quadrobists and therians is that therians truly get into the role of an animal (the one they feel spiritually connected to) and identify as such,{{cite web|url=https://www.mamamia.com.au/what-is-a-therian/|title=What is a Therian? And why do children identify as animals?|date=2024-10-10|access-date=2025-03-03}} while quadrobists see quadrobics as a physical activity and a sport.
