Feud with Joey Badass

In June 2015, tensions began brewing between Troy Ave and a fellow Brooklyn-native rapper Joey Badass, when the latter declared himself the "#1 independent hip hop recording artist and a brand in the world" in a series of tweets, to which the former responded in another tweet by pointing out that he has been signed to Cinematic Music Group, whose music is distributed by RED Distribution, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment.{{cite web|url=http://www.mtv.com/news/2194241/joey-badass-troy-ave-indie/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160326015556/http://www.mtv.com/news/2194241/joey-badass-troy-ave-indie/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=March 26, 2016 |title=Joey Bada$$ And Troy Ave Are Trying To Out-Indie Each Other |date=June 23, 2015 |first=Nadeska |last=Alexis |website=MTV News |access-date=August 31, 2016}} Joey Badass later refuted reports of a feud between him and Troy Ave in another tweet.{{cite magazine|url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-juice/6605777/troy-ave-joey-badass-twitter-beef-independent-hip-hop |title=Troy Ave & Joey Badass Duke It Out On Twitter Over Who Runs the (Independent) Rap Game |date=June 23, 2015 |first=Natalie |last=Wiener |magazine=Billboard |access-date=August 31, 2016}}

On July 7, 2015, in an interview with Ebro Darden on Hot 97, Joey Badass had words of praise for Troy Ave, stating: "At some point you gotta [sic] have some level of respect for Troy because, at the end of the day, we're both independent artists who are standing on major platforms next to a whole bunch of major artists and they know who we are."{{cite web|url=http://www.hotnewhiphop.com/joey-badass-talks-troy-ave-tweets-and-steez-day-festival-on-ebro-in-the-morning-new-video.34488.html |title=Joey Bada$$ Talks Troy Ave Tweets & Steez Day Festival On Ebro In The Morning |date=July 7, 2015 |first=Kevin |last=Goddard |website=HotNewHipHop |access-date=August 31, 2016}} In February 2016, he reignited the feud in a single, titled "Ready", where he raps: "60k, first week for the badass / 200k to this day, I know you niggas mad / With that 80-20 split, my nigga do the math / my nigga Kirk just outsold Troy Ave" (in reference to Kirk Knight's debut studio album Late Knight Special and Troy Ave's second studio album Major Without a Deal).{{cite web|url=http://www.xxlmag.com/rap-music/new-music/2016/02/joey-badass-ready/ |title=Joey Badass Throws Shots at Troy Ave on "Ready" |date=February 22, 2016 |first=Justin |last=Ivey |website=XXL |access-date=August 31, 2016}}{{cite web|url=http://hiphopdx.com/editorials/id.3239/title.joey-bada-troy-ave-beef-5-things-we-learned |title=Joey Bada$$ & Troy Ave Beef: 5 Things We Learned |date=March 6, 2016 |first=Hugh |last=Least |website=HipHopDX |access-date=August 31, 2016}} In response, Troy Ave released a diss track, titled "Badass" the following week, in which he not only insulted Joey Badass, but also targeted fellow Pro Era member Capital Steez, who committed suicide by jumping off a building in December 2012.{{cite web|url=http://www.laweekly.com/music/joey-bada-and-pro-era-turn-tragedy-into-celebration-with-their-annual-steez-day-festival-7093577 |title=Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era Turn Tragedy Into Celebration With Their Annual Steez Day Festival |date=July 5, 2016 |first=Tara |last=Mahadevan |website=LA Weekly |access-date=August 30, 2016}}{{cite web|url=http://www.thefader.com/2013/11/26/capital-steez-king-capital |title=Capital STEEZ: King Capital |date=November 26, 2013 |first=Eli |last=Rosenberg |website=The Fader |access-date=August 30, 2016}}
