It turns out that this is consequent on use of the Visual Editor Cite tool and an Edit filter ({{efl|979}}) tracks articles quoting these Journal articles.

:Hello User:AllyD. It's possible that the edit filter 979 could be set to 'disallow', but that would also catch people who merely rearranged an article containing the bad reference. Instead, maybe the Visual Editor cite tool could be repaired. Anyone who hasn't seen the problem yet could look at [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=1124015516#Paywalled_1970s_biochemical_articles_used_widely_as_references this link] for explanation. If this only happens for single-digit PMIDs maybe the tool could be modified to not accept any PMIDs less than 10. In recent months the filter 979 is reporting almost one error per day, so the table on this page is about to get bigger. EdJohnston (talk) 02:58, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
