.pw is the country code top-level domain for the Republic of Palau.
History
The country code top-level domain .pw was delegated to the Pacific island nation of Palau in 1997.{{cite web|title=IANA {{!}} IANA Report on Redelegation of the .pw Top-Level Domain|url=https://www.iana.org/reports/2003/pw-report-30jun03.html|website=IANA|access-date=2 April 2017|date=30 June 2003|archive-date=4 June 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160604064908/http://www.iana.org/reports/2003/pw-report-30jun03.html|url-status=live}} It has since been redelegated a number of times. Directi, a group of technology businesses, obtained exclusive rights over .pw from EnCirca in 2004.{{cite web |title=Directi to relaunch .pw as an open TLD |url=https://domainincite.com/10705-directi-to-relaunch-pw-as-an-open-tld |website=DomainIncite |publisher=DomainIncite |access-date=27 May 2025}} From 25 March 2013, domains under the .pw TLD are available to the general public. Since then, it is sometimes marketed as a domain for professionals (professional web).
In July 2013 the registry announced that they had passed the 250,000 registration milestone within the first three months, after having 50,000 registered domains in the first three weeks.{{cite web|title=.pw Announces Single Character Domain Names Auction {{!}} .PW - the Professional Web|url=http://registry.pw/pw-announces-single-character-domain-names-auction|website=registry.pw|access-date=2 April 2017|archive-date=24 March 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170324152757/http://registry.pw/pw-announces-single-character-domain-names-auction/|url-status=live}}{{cite web|title=.PW Crosses 50,000 Domain Registrations In 3 Weeks {{!}} .PW - the Professional Web|url=http://registry.pw/pw-crosses-fiftythousand-domains/|website=registry.pw|access-date=2 April 2017|archive-date=25 March 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170325033820/http://registry.pw/pw-crosses-fiftythousand-domains/|url-status=live}}
Issues
A few months after opening the registry to the general public, .pw became the target of spammers.
Symantec released two reports in April and May 2013 claiming that domains under .pw TLD were a significant source of spam e-mail.{{cite web |title=Rise of .pw URLs in Spam Messages |url=https://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/rise-pw-urls-spam-messages |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190415082512/https://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/rise-pw-urls-spam-messages |archive-date=15 April 2019 |access-date=2 April 2017 |website=Symantec Security Response}}{{cite web |title=.pw URLs in Spam Keep Showing Up |url=https://community.broadcom.com/symantecenterprise/communities/community-home/librarydocuments/viewdocument?DocumentKey=f749d46a-cd27-4407-aeb1-7458a88215fb&CommunityKey=83a670da-6a1e-4351-8526-762091d56362&tab=librarydocuments |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190415082407/https://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/pw-urls-spam-keep-showing |archive-date=15 April 2019 |access-date=2 April 2017 |website=Symantec Security Response}} Directi responded that it had zero tolerance for spam and would be deleting domains accused of violating its anti-abuse policy.{{cite web |date=3 May 2013 |title=Directi fighting "massive" .pw spam outbreak |url=http://domainincite.com/12895-directi-fighting-massive-pw-spam-outbreak |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160916094200/http://domainincite.com/12895-directi-fighting-massive-pw-spam-outbreak |archive-date=16 September 2016 |access-date=13 September 2017 |website=Domain Incite}}
In 2016, the Anti-Phishing Working Group stated that the .cc, .com, .pw, and .tk domain names account for 75% of all malicious domain registrations.{{Cite web |url=https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/11/02/1082798/tiny-pacific-island-global-capital-cybercrime/ |language=en-US |title=How a tiny Pacific Island became the global capital of cybercrime |first=Jacob |last=Judah |date=2023-11-02 |accessdate=2023-11-10 |website=MIT Technology Review |publisher=Massachusetts Institute of Technology}}
