The 1627 Gargano earthquake struck Gargano and part of Tavoliere, southern Italy, at about mid-day on 30 July 1627. A "very large earthquake" caused a major tsunami, the largest seismic event ever recorded in the Gargano region,{{citation|title=Identification of tsunami deposits and liquefaction features in the Gargano area (Italy): paleoseismological implication|url=http://www.annalsofgeophysics.eu/index.php/annals/article/view/3460|first1=P. The most extensive damage was noted between San Severo and Lesina.
Some sources describe a large 1626 Naples earthquake,{{cite book|last1=Gates|first1=Alexander E.|last2=Ritchie|first2=David|title=Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=b1sXfJCiCHQC&pg=PA292|year= 2009|publisher=Infobase Publishing|isbn=978-0-8160-7270-5|page=292}} but other have argued that these are misreports of the 1627 event.{{cite journal |last1=Wasowski |first1=J |last2=Del Gaudio |first2=V |title=Evaluating seismically induced mass movement hazard in Caramanico Terme (Italy) |journal=Engineering Geology |date=December 2000 |volume=58 |issue=3–4 |pages=291–311 |doi=10.1016/S0013-7952(00)00040-5|bibcode=2000EngGe..58..291W }}
