A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Petersham on 22 March 1919 because of the resignation of John Cohen ({{Australian politics/name|Nationalist}}) who had accepted an appointment as a Judge of the District Court.{{cite NSW Parliament |title=Mr John Jacob Cohen (1859–1939) |id=1055 |former=Yes |access-date=2021-03-30}} H.
