The 1969 PGA Championship was the 51st PGA Championship, played August 14–17 on the South Course of NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio, a suburb south of Dayton. Raymond Floyd, age 26, won the first of his four major titles, one stroke ahead of runner-up Gary Player.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=--9OAAAAIBAJ&sjid=uwEEAAAAIBAJ&pg=7173%2C4000324 |newspaper=Toledo Blade |location=Ohio |last=Taylor |first=Jim |title=Angelic Floyd Holds Off Mob |date=August 18, 1969 |page=15 |access-date=January 2, 2013}}{{cite magazine |url=https://www.si.com/vault/1969/08/25/609890/golf-gets-a-look-at-the-real-world |magazine=Sports Illustrated |last=Jenkins |first=Dan |author-link=Dan Jenkins |title=Golf gets a look at the real world |date=August 25, 1969 |page=24}}

Floyd held a five-shot lead after the third round, at 202 (−11),{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=kL1FAAAAIBAJ&sjid=kb0MAAAAIBAJ&pg=7223%2C141498 |newspaper=Telegraph-Herald |location=Dubuque, Iowa |agency=Associated Press |title=Floyd holds five-stroke lead after third round of PGA meet |date=August 17, 1969 |page=24}} and carded a 74 (+3) on Sunday.{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=_L5SAAAAIBAJ&sjid=4H0DAAAAIBAJ&pg=7010%2C2423734|newspaper=Pittsburgh Post-Gazette |last=Gundelfinger |first=Phil |title=Floyd scrambles to one-shot PGA win |date=August 18, 1969 |page=30 }}

During the tournament's third round, demonstrators tried to disrupt the play of Player and Jack Nicklaus. Ice was thrown in Player's face and one spectator yelled while Nicklaus prepared to putt.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=atxVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=8uADAAAAIBAJ&pg=6877%2C3868592 |newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard |location=Oregon |agency=Associated Press |title=Civil rights demonstrators disrupt PGA championships |date=August 17, 1969 |page=4B }}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=kL1FAAAAIBAJ&sjid=kb0MAAAAIBAJ&pg=5853,142150 |newspaper=Telegraph-Herald |location=Dubuque, Iowa |agency=Associated Press |title=Gary Player attacked |date=August 17, 1969 |page=24}} Security was stepped up for the final round on Sunday.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=--9OAAAAIBAJ&sjid=uwEEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5485%2C4001086 |newspaper=Toledo Blade |location=Ohio |title=Escort new to Floyd |date=August 18, 1969 |page=15 }}

This was the first PGA Championship after the formation of the "Tournament Players Division" in December 1968,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=dbVWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=cekDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7296%2C5214308 |newspaper=Spokesman-Review |location=Spokane, Washington |agency=Associated Press |title=Tour golfers, PGA settle fuss over tourney control |date=December 14, 1968 |page=15}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=VDIaAAAAIBAJ&sjid=WigEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5430%2C2256320 |newspaper=Milwaukee Journal |title=Pro golf struggle is settled; PGA forms tourney group |date=December 14, 1968 |page=18}}{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=NX9AAAAAIBAJ&sjid=waMMAAAAIBAJ&pg=6678,2714213|newspaper=Glasgow Herald |location=Scotland, U.K.|title=Dispute in U.S. settled |date=December 16, 1968 |page=5 }} later renamed the PGA Tour. It also marked the permanent move of the PGA Championship to August, excluding 1971, which was played in Florida in February. Except for 1965, it had been played in July in the 1960s; five times during the decade it was held the week immediately after The Open Championship in Britain, including 1968. The new scheduling allowed more players to participate in both majors, cementing the concept of the modern grand slam.

The attendance on Sunday was 23,543 and a new record was set for the four days at 80,847; including practice days, the week's attendance was 106,043.
