{{1979–80 Big Sky men's basketball standings}}

The 1979–80 Idaho Vandals men's basketball team represented the University of Idaho during the 1979–80 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Vandals were led by second-year head coach Don Monson and played their home games on campus at the Kibbie Dome in {{nowrap|Moscow, Idaho.{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=uA0oAAAAIBAJ&sjid=MO4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=4333%2C8318809 |work=Spokesman-Review |location=(Spokane, Washington) |last=Missildine |first=Harry |title=Vandals looking up in openers |date=November 30, 1979 |page=46}}}}

After five consecutive seasons in last place in the Big Sky Conference, the Vandals were expected by most to stay {{nowrap|there,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=L60SAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KfkDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7076%2C2288129 |work=Spokane Daily Chronicle |location=(Washington) |title=Vandals roll to win |date=February 25, 1980 |page=23}}}} but climbed up to second in the final standings and qualified for the four-team conference tournament for the first {{nowrap|time.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0_tLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Oe4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=1734%2C3168128 |work=Spokesman-Review |location=(Spokane, Washington) |last=Missildine |first=Harry |title=Two Vandal victories might help put the Palouse Axis on the map |date=February 22, 1980 |page=21}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=1ftLAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Oe4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2978%2C3990010|work=Spokesman-Review |location=(Spokane, Washington) |title=Vandals drub NAU |date=February 24, 1980 |page=C1}}}}

In non-conference games, the Vandals fell to Oregon State, Washington, and neighbor Washington State, but had wins over {{nowrap|Gonzaga,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=M5lfAAAAIBAJ&sjid=jzEMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2891%2C2536263 |work=Lewiston Morning Tribune |location=(Idaho) |last=Barrows |first=Bob |title=Newman's bucket gives Idaho 50-49 win |date=December 22, 1979 |page=1C}}{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=Pf1jAAAAIBAJ&sjid=S-4DAAAAIBAJ&pg=5608%2C3701218 |work=Spokesman-Review |location=Spokane, Washington |last=Missildine |first=Harry |title=Vandals squeeze past Zags, 50-49|date=December 22, 1979 |page=23}}}} Penn State,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0AYzAAAAIBAJ&sjid=EuIDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3027%2C9546086 |work=Eugene Register-Guard |location=(Oregon)|title=Idaho grinds down Nittany Lions |date=December 29, 1979 |page=3C}} Oregon, and Nebraska. The Vandals met Montana in the semifinals, whom they had swept in the regular season, but lost the third meeting on the neutral court.
