The 1st Golden Raspberry Awards were held on March 31, 1981, at founder John J. B. Wilson's living room alcove to recognize the worst the film industry had to offer in 1980. For it was a double feature of Can't Stop the Music, winner of Worst Picture, and Xanadu that inspired Wilson to start the Razzies. Each category included as many as ten nominees; the maximum was lowered to five the following year to mirror the Oscars. "There was a fake stage in John's apartment," remembers Maureen Murphy, who was a presenter.{{cite news |title=25 Years of Razzing Hollywood's Stinkers |last=Germain |first=David |work=Sun Sentinel |date=February 26, 2005 |page=7D}}{{cite magazine |url=https://ew.com/article/2011/01/28/razzies-brief-history/ |title=The Razzies: A brief history |last=Svetkey |first=Benjamin |magazine=Entertainment Weekly |date=January 28, 2011 |access-date=November 3, 2023}}{{cite web |url=https://www.thewrap.com/razzie-awards-worst-picture-winner-complete-cats/ |title=Razzie Awards: Every Worst Picture "Winner", From 'Can't Stop the Music' to 'Diana: The Musical' (Photos) |last=Geier |first=Thom |work=TheWrap |date=March 26, 2022 |access-date=November 3, 2023}}

Criticism
The awards are often criticized for nominating The Shining in two categories: Shelley Duvall for Worst Actress and Stanley Kubrick for Worst Director.{{cite web |url=https://collider.com/times-the-razzies-got-it-wrong/ |title=From 'The Shining' to 'Jaws': 10 Times The Razzies Got It Wrong |last=Disalvo |first=Tom |work=Collider |date=March 27, 2022 |access-date=September 25, 2022}} In 2022, Razzies founder John J. B. Wilson admitted that he regrets the nomination, saying: "Knowing the backstory and the way that Stanley Kubrick kind of pulverized her, I would take that back."{{cite web |url=https://variety.com/2022/film/news/razzie-awards-regret-shelley-duvall-shining-nom-1235187354/ |title=Razzie Awards Founder Regrets Shelley Duvall's 'Shining' Nomination: 'I'd Take That Back' |last=Sharf |first=Zack |work=Variety |date=February 22, 2022 |access-date=November 3, 2023}} That same year, the awards committee rescinded Duvall's nomination, but not Kubrick's.{{cite web |url=https://razzies.com/2/post/2020/05/a-shining-razzie-throwback.html |title=A Shining Razzie Throwback! |last=Wilson |first=John |author-link=John J.
