In his review for AllMusic, Chris Kelsey states: "The men speak the same language —albeit with slightly different accents— and they communicate quite well. A nice record."{{allMusic|last=Kelsey|first=Chris|class=album|id=mw0000022505|title=Matthew Shipp – 2-Z: Review|accessdate=March 13, 2014}} The Penguin Guide to Jazz wrote that the album "is a meeting of generations, and Shipp sounds respectful and happy to take second place for much of it, constantly searching for some normative path that might hint at a tonal centre".{{cite book|last = Cook|first = Richard|author-link = Richard Cook (journalist)|author2=Brian Morton |author-link2=Brian Morton (Scottish writer) |title = The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD|edition = 9th|series = The Penguin Guide to Jazz|year = 2008|publisher = Penguin|location = London|isbn = 0141034017|pages = 1293}}
