Controversies

Ertl, who solely won the Chemistry Prize, showed both surprise and disappointment that Gábor Somorjai, a foundational pioneer in modern surface science and catalysis, wasn't named for the prize alongside him.{{cite web |last=Jacoby |first=Mitch |title=Surface Science's Sage – April 7, 2008 Issue – Vol. 86 Issue 14 – Chemical & Engineering News |url=http://cen.acs.org/articles/86/i14/Surface-Sciences-Sage.html |website=cen.acs.org}}{{cite web |date=10 October 2007 |title=Birthday Boy Gets a Nobel |url=https://www.science.org/content/article/birthday-boy-gets-nobel}} Somorjai and Ertl had previously shared the Wolf Prize for Chemistry in 1998. The Nobel Foundation's decision to exclude Somorjai was criticized in the scientific community.{{cite web |last=Noorden2007-10-10T16:00:00+01:00 |first=Richard Van |title=Surface chemistry wins Nobel Prize |url=https://www.chemistryworld.com/news/surface-chemistry-wins-nobel-prize/3003834.article |website=Chemistry World}}
