The 2008 FIFA Club World Cup final was the final match of the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup, an association football tournament for the champion clubs from each of FIFA's six continental confederations. The match took place at the International Stadium Yokohama, Japan, on 21 December 2008, and pitted LDU Quito of Ecuador, the CONMEBOL club champions, and Manchester United of England, the UEFA club champions. Road to final

Both Manchester United and LDU Quito qualified for the competition at the semi-final stage, after winning their respective continental competition, the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League and the 2008 Copa Libertadores.

LDU Quito's opening game was against Mexican side Pachuca, who had defeated Egyptian club Al Ahly 4–2 in the quarter-finals after extra time.{{cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252217/match=300073123/report.html |title=Al-Ahly – Pachuca Match Report |publisher=FIFA |date=13 December 2008 |access-date=20 December 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090216225713/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252217/match=300073123/report.html |archive-date=16 February 2009 |url-status=dead }} Their semi-final match was played at the National Stadium in Tokyo on 17 December 2008.{{cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252222/match=300073125/report.html |title=Pachuca – Liga de Quito Match Report |publisher=FIFA |date=17 December 2008 |access-date=20 December 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090202043904/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252222/match=300073125/report.html |archive-date=2 February 2009 |url-status=dead }} The Ecuadorian side scored two goals in the first 26 minutes through Claudio Bieler and Luis Bolaños, securing their place in the Club World Cup final.{{cite web|url=https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252222/match=300073125/summary.html |title=In a Liga of their own |publisher=FIFA |date=17 December 2008 |access-date=20 December 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081221083457/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round%3D252222/match%3D300073125/summary.html |archive-date=21 December 2008 |url-status=dead }}

Manchester United's semi-final opponents were Gamba Osaka, who had previously defeated Australian A-League premiers and Asian Champions League runners-up Adelaide United (1–0) to move into the second semi-final on 18 December.{{cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252217/match=300073122/report.html |title=Adelaide United – Gamba Osaka Match Report |publisher=FIFA |date=14 December 2008 |access-date=20 December 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090130072925/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252217/match=300073122/report.html |archive-date=30 January 2009 |url-status=dead }} Nemanja Vidić and Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the first half, building up a two-goal lead at half-time. Masato Yamazaki was the next to score in the 74th minute to bring Gamba back into contention, but Wayne Rooney scored twice and Darren Fletcher once within the next five minutes to extend United's lead. Yasuhito Endō converted an 85th-minute penalty kick and Hideo Hashimoto got a third for Gamba just minutes before the final whistle. The result was 5–3, taking Manchester United to the final.{{cite web|url=https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252222/match=300073124/summary.html |title=United hit five in thriller |publisher=FIFA |date=18 December 2008 |access-date=20 December 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090122065019/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round%3D252222/match%3D300073124/summary.html |archive-date=22 January 2009 |url-status=dead }}{{cite web |url=https://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252222/match=300073124/report.html |title=Gamba Osaka – Manchester United Match Report |publisher=FIFA |date=18 December 2008 |access-date=20 December 2008 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090202051203/http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/matches/round=252222/match=300073124/report.html |archive-date=2 February 2009 |url-status=dead }}
