The 2011 NFL draft was the 76th installment of the annual NFL draft, where the franchises of the National Football League select newly eligible football players. Like the 2010 draft, the 2011 draft was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York, over three days: this year, the first round took place on Thursday, April 28, 2011; the second and third rounds took place on Friday, April 29; with the final four rounds on Saturday, April 30, 2011.{{cite web |url=http://www.footballgeography.com/nfl-draft-sites/ |title=NFL Draft Locations |author= |date=October 2, 2014 |website=FootballGeography.com |access-date=October 23, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150905090250/http://www.footballgeography.com/nfl-draft-sites/ |archive-date=September 5, 2015 |url-status=dead |df=mdy-all }}{{cite news |last1=Salomone |first1=Dan |title=NFL Draft headed to Chicago in 2015 |url=http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/NFL-Draft-headed-to-Chicago-in-2015/3ac322b1-3b4c-4a16-aba7-6e08d31b1756 |access-date=June 3, 2015 |publisher=New York Giants |work=Giants.com |date=October 2, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150930065327/http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/NFL-Draft-headed-to-Chicago-in-2015/3ac322b1-3b4c-4a16-aba7-6e08d31b1756 |archive-date=September 30, 2015 |url-status=dead |df=mdy-all }} The Carolina Panthers, who had the worst record for the 2010 NFL season at 2–14, had the right to the first selection in the draft, where they selected Auburn University quarterback Cam Newton, who was the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner.{{cite web |title=2010 – 76th Award Cam Newton Auburn University |url=http://www.heisman.com/winners/c-newton10.php |publisher=Heisman Trust |access-date=April 30, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111108161435/http://www.heisman.com/winners/c-newton10.php |archive-date=November 8, 2011 |url-status=dead |df=mdy }} The 2011 draft is regarded as one of the most talented draft classes in NFL history, as 12 of the first 16 players have been selected to at least one Pro Bowl.{{Cite web|last=Schmeelk|first=John|date=2015-12-15|title=The 2011 NFL Draft Class Might Be The Best Ever|url=https://the-cauldron.com/the-2011-nfl-draft-class-might-be-the-best-ever-596113be87be|access-date=2022-02-18|website=Medium|language=en}}

Impact of labor situation

{{Main|2011 NFL lockout}}

Despite an ongoing labor dispute between league owners and players over a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), a provision in the expired CBA ensured that this draft would still take place, despite the fact that the owners had imposed a lockout to prevent the start of the league year.{{cite news |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/14/AR2010121407094.html |title=Time is short for NFL, players |first=Mark |last=Maske |newspaper=The Washington Post |date=December 15, 2010 |access-date=December 21, 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121111182231/http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/14/AR2010121407094.html |archive-date=November 11, 2012 |url-status=live |df=mdy }} Fans in attendance at the draft expressed their displeasure with the lockout by booing NFL commissioner Roger Goodell during the event and chanting "We want football."{{cite news |last=Corbett |first=Jim |title=Risk takers: Will bold moves in NFL draft pay off this season? |url=https://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2011-05-02-nfl-draft-sw-cover_N.htm |access-date=May 4, 2011 |newspaper=USA Today |date=May 2, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110510105448/http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2011-05-02-nfl-draft-sw-cover_n.htm |archive-date=May 10, 2011 |url-status=live |df=mdy }}

Due to the labor situation and the lockout, franchises were not able to trade players for draft selections (trades involving only selections were permitted), and were unable to sign or even contact drafted or undrafted players until the lockout was lifted. Because of the lockout, the Panthers could not sign or even negotiate with their first draft pick before the draft began, as other teams have done in years past.{{cite web |last=Cranston |first=Mike |title=No. 1, with a question |url=http://www.thecharlottepost.com/index.php?src=news&srctype=detail&category=Sports&refno=3576 |work=The Charlotte Post |access-date=November 4, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20111003004957/http://www.thecharlottepost.com/index.php?src=news&srctype=detail&category=Sports&refno=3576 |archive-date=October 3, 2011 |date=April 27, 2011 |url-status=live }}{{cite web |last=Smola |first=Jared |title=Lockout Losers |url=http://www.draftsharks.com/article/1040/lockout-losers-2011 |publisher=Draft Sharks |access-date=May 23, 2014 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20140523160523/http://www.draftsharks.com/article/1040/lockout-losers-2011 |archive-date=May 23, 2014 |date=May 23, 2014 |url-status=live |df=mdy }}

The restriction on trading players extended to players selected in this draft—teams were unable to swap any player once selected, e.g. as happened in 2004 when the San Diego Chargers and New York Giants completed a draft day trade involving Eli Manning and Philip Rivers who had been selected first and fourth respectively.{{cite web |last=Brinson |first=Will |title=Casserly: 'Draft will go on as scheduled' |url=http://andy-benoit.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/26518159 |work=CBS Sports |access-date=November 4, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110811120808/http://andy-benoit.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/26518159 |archive-date=August 11, 2011 |date=December 19, 2010 |url-status=dead |df=mdy }} In addition, with no agreement in place between owners and players mandating future drafts, teams were advised by the league that any trades involving future draft picks would be made at the teams' "own risk".{{cite web |last=Florio |first=Mike |title=Teams may trade future draft picks "at their own risk" |url=http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/21/teams-may-trade-future-draft-picks-at-their-own-risk/ |access-date=March 25, 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110814173356/http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/03/21/teams-may-trade-future-draft-picks-at-their-own-risk/ |website=nbcsports.com |date=March 21, 2011 |archive-date=August 14, 2011 |url-status=live |df=mdy }} This warning did not dissuade several teams from making trades involving future selections.

The selection of Newton, a junior, marked the third straight draft where the first overall selection was an underclassman. Determination of draft order

The draft order is based generally on each team's record from the previous season, with teams which qualified for the postseason selecting after those which failed to make the playoffs.
