Report
=Background=
For this year, the circuit was slightly modified. The first corner was changed, instead of a right-left chicane it is now left-right. The idea behind this change is to make the pit exit much safer than last year, where the cars were exiting the pits on the racing line.{{cite web|url=http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/punta-del-este-eprix-track-guide.aspx|title=Punta del Este ePrix - Circuit guide|publisher=FIA Formula E|date=2015-12-09|access-date=2015-12-18|archive-date=2021-08-21|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210821102935/https://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/punta-del-este-eprix-track-guide.aspx|url-status=dead}}
Mahindra driver Nick Heidfeld missed the event, after undergoing surgery to repair ligament damage in his wrist after a crash at the previous race in Putrajaya. He was replaced by Formula Renault 3.5 champion Oliver Rowland, from Great Britain.{{cite news|url=http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/oliver-rowland-replaces-injured-heidfeld.aspx|title=Oliver Rowland replaces injured Heidfeld|work=Formula E|publisher=Formula E Holdings Limited|accessdate=13 December 2015|date=4 December 2015|archive-date=12 December 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151212171751/http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/oliver-rowland-replaces-injured-heidfeld.aspx|url-status=dead}}
Team Trulli withdrew from the championship after failing to enter their new drivetrain for the first two events. Therefore, only 18 drivers participated in this race and also for the rest of the season.{{cite web|url=http://fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/trulli-announcement.aspx|title=Trulli Formula E Team announce withdrawal from championship|date=15 December 2015|publisher=fiaformulae.com|access-date=18 December 2015|archive-date=22 December 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151222074432/http://fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/trulli-announcement.aspx|url-status=dead}}
Venturi driver Jacques Villeneuve crashed in qualifying. His team was unable to repair the damage in time for race day, and the Canadian was subsequently withdrawn.{{cite news|url=http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/villeneuve-to-miss-punta-del-este-eprix.aspx|title=Villeneuve to miss Punta race|publisher=FIA Formula E|accessdate=22 December 2015|date=19 December 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151221184950/http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2015/december/villeneuve-to-miss-punta-del-este-eprix.aspx|archive-date=21 December 2015|url-status=dead}}
