- 7 May – At the UK general election, the Scottish National Party wins 56 out of the 59 seats in Scotland, making them the largest political party by both number of seats and popular vote. - In addition, Mhairi Black of the Scottish National Party, at twenty years of age, becomes the youngest elected MP since prior to the Reform Act 1832. Black is also the first person elected to Parliament under the provisions of the Electoral Administration Act 2006 which reduced the minimum age of candidacy from 21 to 18 years of age. She has unseated the then-Shadow Foreign Secretary, Douglas Alexander, 47 years old at the time of the election.
