Previous season
The Cornhuskers finished the 2017–18 season 19–17, 6–14 in Big Ten play to finish second-to-last. As the No. 13 seed in the Big Ten tournament, they made a run but lost in the quarterfinals to Wisconsin. Despite winning 13 Big Ten games, the Cornhuskers received a bid to the National Invitation Tournament. They won in the first round of the NIT to Mississippi State but lost in the second round to TCU.
Following the season, head coach Tim Miles was fired, having lead the team after seven seasons.{{Cite web|url=https://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/mens-basketball/tim-miles-out-after-seven-seasons-as-nebraska-basketball-coach/article_f9645b9e-340f-5562-bc3e-228d3b9950b4.html|title=Tim Miles out after seven seasons as Nebraska basketball coach; Moos wants consistency in program|last=Basnett|first=Chris|website=JournalStar.com|language=en|access-date=2019-07-17}} Four days later, the school hired former Chicago Bulls' head coach Fred Hoiberg as the next head coach of the program.{{Cite news|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-basketball-ncaa-neb-hoiberg-idUSKCN1RB0LX|title=Nebraska hires Hoiberg to seven-year deal|date=2019-03-30|work=Reuters|access-date=2019-04-29|language=en}}
Offseason
Due to a change in coaching staff, Nebraska experienced a near-complete overhaul of its roster, retaining only two players from the previous season (only one of which had seen any playing time for Nebraska).{{Cite web|url=http://collegehoopswatch.com/2019/10/06/nebraska-basketball-the-mayor-presides-over-a-total-roster-revamp/|title=Nebraska Basketball: The mayor presides over a total roster revamp|first=Ken|last=Cross|date=October 6, 2019|website=College Hoops Watch}} The rebuilt team took an exhibition trip to Italy; a documentary on the trip was filmed by the Big Ten Network.{{Cite web|url=https://btn.com/2019/10/21/btn-to-premiere-the-b1g-trip-nebraska-basketball-in-italy-on-monday-oct-28/|title=BTN to Premiere The B1G Trip: Nebraska Basketball In Italy on Monday, Oct. 28|date=October 21, 2019}}
