General elections were held in Barbados on 19 January 2022 to elect the 30 members of the House of Assembly. The ruling Barbados Labour Party won all 30 seats for the second consecutive election.

This was the 12th national election held since independence from the United Kingdom in 1966, the 16th since the institution of universal suffrage in 1950, and the first since Barbados became a republic in 2021.{{Cite web|last=Gershon|first=Livia|date=8 December 2021|title=After Breaking Ties With Britain, Barbados Announces Heritage District Tracing Slavery's Toll|url=https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/barbados-announces-new-heritage-district-documenting-slavery-180979175/|url-status=live|access-date=2022-01-22|website=Smithsonian Magazine|language=en|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211208170930/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/barbados-announces-new-heritage-district-documenting-slavery-180979175/ |archive-date=8 December 2021 }} For the first time, both the ruling Barbados Labour Party and its historical rival the Democratic Labour Party were led by women.{{Cite web|date=19 January 2022|title=Barbados Elections: Party leaders confident of victory after casting ballot|url=https://www.jamaicaobserver.com/latestnews/Barbados_Elections:_Party_leaders_confident_of_victory_after_casting_ballot|url-status=live|access-date=2022-01-22|website=Jamaica Observer|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220120021903/https://www.jamaicaobserver.com/latestnews/Barbados_Elections:_Party_leaders_confident_of_victory_after_casting_ballot |archive-date=20 January 2022 }}

Background

According to the Constitution of Barbados, the Parliament shall stand dissolved no later than every five years from the first sitting of Parliament.Constitution: Section 61 (3): "Subject to the provisions of subsection (4), Parliament, unless sooner dissolved, shall continue for five years from the date of its first sitting after any dissolution and shall then stand dissolved. (4) At any time when Barbados is at war, Parliament may extend the period of five years specified in subsection (3) for not more than twelve months at a time:" The previous general elections were held on 24 May 2018, and the first sitting of the new session of Parliament was held on 5 June 2018.{{Cite web|title=First Session of 2018 - 2023: 1st Sitting on Tuesday 05th June 2018|url=https://www.barbadosparliament.com/sittings/details/192|access-date=29 December 2021|website=The Barbados Parliament}} After the dissolution of Parliament, the President of Barbados must issue a writ for a general election of members to the House of Assembly and for appointment of Senators to the Senate within 90 days.Constitution: Section 62 (1) (2): "After every dissolution of Parliament the Governor General shall issue writs for a general election of members of the House of Assembly returnable within ninety days from that dissolution. (2) As soon as may be after every general election the Governor General shall proceed under section 36 to the appointment of Senators."

Despite a commanding 29–1 BLP majority in the House of Assembly and elections not being required until 2023, on 27 December 2021 Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that an early election would be held on 19 January the following year.{{Cite web|title=Barbados calls snap election after becoming republic|url=https://www.dw.com/en/barbados-calls-snap-election-after-becoming-republic/a-60270800|url-status=live|access-date=30 December 2021|website=Deutsche Welle|language=en-GB|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211228052020/https://www.dw.com/en/barbados-calls-snap-election-after-becoming-republic/a-60270800 |archive-date=28 December 2021 }}{{Cite news|date=28 December 2021|title=Barbados plans Jan. 19 snap election after becoming republic|language=en|work=Reuters|url=https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/barbados-hold-jan-19-snap-election-after-becoming-republic-2021-12-27/|access-date=30 December 2021}}{{Cite web|date=28 December 2021|title=Mottley calls early Barbados General Election for January 2022|url=https://www.nationnews.com/2021/12/27/mottley-calls-early-barbados-general-election-january-2022/|access-date=29 December 2021|website=Nation News|language=en-US}} Mottley's announcement came within a month of the country becoming a republic.{{Cite web|title=EXPLAINER: Mia Amor Mottley answers 'Why have elections now?' {{!}} Loop Jamaica|url=https://jamaica.loopnews.com/content/explainer-mia-amor-mottley-answers-why-have-elections-now-2|access-date=2022-01-21|website=Loop News|language=en}} She described the election as a "refuelling stop" for the nation, while opposition leaders criticised the early elections as an attempt by her to consolidate power.{{Cite web|agency=Associated Press|date=2022-01-19|title=Barbados heads to snap general election amid criticism|url=https://www.dailysabah.com/world/americas/barbados-heads-to-snap-general-election-amid-criticism|access-date=2022-01-21|website=Daily Sabah|language=en-US}}

On 18 January, Philip Catlyn, a member of the Barbados Sovereignty Party (BSP), filed for an injunction against the President and the Attorney General to stop the election.
