From July 14 to November 9, 2023, the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) went on strike over a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). It was the longest actors' strike against the film and TV studios in Hollywood history.{{Cite web |last=Maddaus |first=Gene |date=2023-11-08 |title=SAG-AFTRA Approves Deal to End Historic Strike |url=https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/sag-aftra-tentative-deal-historic-strike-1235771894/ |access-date=2025-04-01 |website=Variety |language=en-US}} Its duration overlapped significantly with the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.

Both the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes contributed to the biggest interruption to the American film and television industries since the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 just three years prior.{{Cite news |last=Coyle |first=Jake |date=July 17, 2023 |title=Hollywood plunges into all-out war on the heels of pandemic and a streaming revolution |newspaper=Washington Post |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/07/17/actors-strike-writers-effects-pandemic-streaming/6ef4271c-24b8-11ee-9201-826e5bb78fa1_story.html |access-date=July 17, 2023 |archive-date=July 30, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230730021140/https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/07/17/actors-strike-writers-effects-pandemic-streaming/6ef4271c-24b8-11ee-9201-826e5bb78fa1_story.html |url-status=live }} In addition to standing in solidarity with the writers, the strike was led by changes in the industry caused by streaming and its effect on residuals, as well as other new technologies like AI and digital recreation. It marked the first time that actors initiated a labor dispute in the U.S. since the 1980 actors strike and the first time that actors and writers have walked out simultaneously since 1960.

Negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP took place from October 2 to October 11 and resumed on October 24. On November 8, 2023, a tentative deal between the two sides was reached. Striking ended on November 9 at 12:01 a.m. PST.{{cite web|url=https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/sag-aftra-tentative-deal-historic-strike-1235771894/|title=SAG-AFTRA Approves Deal to End Historic Strike|first=Gene|last=Maddaus|work=Variety|date=November 8, 2023|accessdate=November 9, 2023|archive-date=November 9, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231109010354/https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/sag-aftra-tentative-deal-historic-strike-1235771894/|url-status=live}}{{cite web|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/sag-aftra-deal-reached-studios-union-contract-terms-1235607563/|title=SAG-AFTRA Reaches Tentative Agreement With Studios, Ending Actors Strike|work=The Hollywood Reporter|first=Katie|last=Kilkenny|date=November 8, 2023|accessdate=November 9, 2023|archive-date=November 9, 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231109004238/https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/sag-aftra-deal-reached-studios-union-contract-terms-1235607563/|url-status=live}} On December 5, the SAG-AFTRA membership officially ratified the contract with over 78% of members voting in favor of it.{{cite web|url=https://deadline.com/2023/12/actors-strike-deal-approved-ratification-vote-sag-aftra-1235649206/|title=SAG-AFTRA Members Ratify New Three-Year Contract With Studios|access-date=2023-12-06|last1=Campione|first1=Katie|last2=White|first2=Peter|date=2023-12-05|work=Deadline Hollywood|archive-date=May 27, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240527184941/https://deadline.com/2023/12/actors-strike-deal-approved-ratification-vote-sag-aftra-1235649206/|url-status=live}}{{cite web|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/sag-aftra-contract-ending-strike-ratified-1235712566/|title=SAG-AFTRA Members Vote to Ratify Strike-Ending Contract|first=Katie|last=Kilkenny|work=The Hollywood Reporter|date=December 5, 2023|accessdate=December 6, 2023|archive-date=May 27, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240527184941/https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/sag-aftra-contract-ending-strike-ratified-1235712566/|url-status=live}}{{cite web|url=https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/sag-aftra-ratifies-contract-1235822165/|title=SAG-AFTRA Ratifies Contract, Officially Ending Historic Labor Dispute|first=Gene|last=Maddaus|work=Variety|date=December 5, 2023|accessdate=December 6, 2023|archive-date=May 27, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240527184941/https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/sag-aftra-ratifies-contract-1235822165/|url-status=live}}{{cite news|url=https://www.sagaftra.org/sag-aftra-members-approve-2023-tvtheatrical-contracts-tentative-agreement|title=SAG-AFTRA Members Approve 2023 TV/Theatrical Contracts Tentative Agreement|publisher=SAG-AFTRA|date=December 5, 2023|accessdate=December 6, 2023|archive-date=May 27, 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240527184942/https://www.sagaftra.org/sag-aftra-members-approve-2023-tvtheatrical-contracts-tentative-agreement|url-status=live}}

During the last decade and the rise of streaming, writers and actors have been frustrated over studio policy regarding residuals from streaming services; the decline of network television has led to a stronger reliance on other residuals. The pruning was also described as illegal, on the grounds that the trees are owned by the city and that Los Angeles' tree ordinances prohibit trimming them between July and September.{{Cite web |title=Chapter 16.76 – Tree Trimming |url=https://library.municode.com/ca/los_angeles_county/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TIT16HI_DIV5MIPR_CH16.76TRTR |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230718180511/https://library.municode.com/ca/los_angeles_county/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TIT16HI_DIV5MIPR_CH16.76TRTR |archive-date=July 18, 2023 |access-date=July 27, 2023 |website=library.municode.com}}{{Cite news |last=Bawden Davis |first=Julie |date=February 26, 1994 |title=When to Prune Trees |work=Los Angeles Times |url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-02-26-hm-27488-story.html |url-status=live |access-date=July 18, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220929195725/https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1994-02-26-hm-27488-story.html |archive-date=September 29, 2022}}{{Cite web |date=July 23, 2023 |title=NBCUniversal Gets Weak Fine for Mid-Strike Tree Pruning |url=https://gizmodo.com/nbc-universal-tree-controversy-los-angeles-penalty-1850668332 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230723220813/https://gizmodo.com/nbc-universal-tree-controversy-los-angeles-penalty-1850668332 |archive-date=July 23, 2023 |access-date=July 23, 2023 |website=Gizmodo |language=en}}{{Cite web |date=July 23, 2023 |title=Universal Studios fined for trimming trees that were shading striking actors and writers from extreme heat |url=https://sg.news.yahoo.com/universal-studios-fined-trimming-trees-204857693.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230723220814/https://sg.news.yahoo.com/universal-studios-fined-trimming-trees-204857693.html |archive-date=July 23, 2023 |access-date=July 23, 2023 |website=Yahoo News |language=en-SG}} NBCUniversal issued a statement to Deadline Hollywood denying that the trimming was done out of malice, claiming that they trim the trees outside the park in July annually for safety, and describing it and the obstructive construction hazards as "unintended challenges for demonstrators".
