Former president Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for President of the United States, considered several prominent Republicans and other individuals before selecting Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his candidate for Vice President of the United States on July 15, 2024, the first day of the 2024 Republican National Convention.{{cite web |author=Main |first=Alison |title=Trump selects Ohio Sen. The Trump–Vance ticket defeated the Harris–Walz ticket in the 2024 presidential election. Vance became the youngest person elected vice president since Richard Nixon in 1952 at 40 years old.
Vance is the first Ohioan to appear on a major party presidential ticket since John Bricker in 1944, the first Ohio native to be elected to the vice presidency since Charles Dawes in 1924, and the first veteran since Al Gore in 1992.{{Cite web |date=July 15, 2024 |title=JD Vance would be first Ohio resident to be vice president, is first in 80 years on ticket |url=https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/07/15/jd-vance-would-be-first-ohio-resident-to-serve-as-vp/74360390007/ |access-date=July 15, 2024 |website=Dispatch.com |archive-date=July 16, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240716142856/https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/07/15/jd-vance-would-be-first-ohio-resident-to-serve-as-vp/74360390007/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite web |date=July 15, 2024 |title=JD Vance Breaks the 'Beard Barrier' |url=https://www.newsweek.com/jd-vance-beard-vice-president-1925651 |access-date=July 15, 2024 |website=Newsweek.com |archive-date=July 16, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240716125349/https://www.newsweek.com/jd-vance-beard-vice-president-1925651 |url-status=live}} He was also the first Millennial, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and veteran of the Iraq War and the wider War on Terror on a presidential ticket, as well as to be elected to the vice presidency.Kornfield, Meryl and LeVine, Marianne. Multiple reporters, political analysts and commentators noted that former president Donald Trump selecting former vice president Mike Pence to be his running mate once again would be highly unlikely following rifts between the two over the future of the Republican Party and Pence's attempts to distance himself from Trump.{{Cite news |title=Pence seeks distance from Trump as he considers 2024 presidential run |language=en-US |newspaper=Washington Post |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/07/21/mike-pence-2024-trump-republicans/ |access-date=August 20, 2022 |archive-date=July 22, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220722192533/https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/07/21/mike-pence-2024-trump-republicans/ |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |date=July 27, 2022 |title=Mike Pence squares up to Donald Trump as former running mates eye 2024 bids |work=Financial Times|url=https://www.ft.com/content/86911121-f78e-48b2-bba1-26c7c0949d8b |access-date=August 20, 2022 |archive-date=August 2, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220802024254/https://www.ft.com/content/86911121-f78e-48b2-bba1-26c7c0949d8b |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |title=Pence seeks distance from Trump as he considers 2024 presidential run |language=en-US |newspaper=Washington Post|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/07/21/mike-pence-2024-trump-republicans/ |access-date=August 20, 2022 |issn=0190-8286 |archive-date=July 22, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220722192533/https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/07/21/mike-pence-2024-trump-republicans/ |url-status=live }} In June 2022, the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack found that Trump said Pence "deserved" calls to be hanged on the day of the attack.{{Cite web |last=Breuninger |first=Kevin |title=Trump chief of staff said the president thought Pence 'deserves' chants of 'hang Mike Pence' on Jan. 6, ex-aide testifies|url=https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/28/jan-6-hearing-trump-thought-pence-deserved-chants-to-hang-him-aide-says.html |access-date=August 20, 2022 |website=CNBC |date=June 28, 2022 |language=en |archive-date=August 20, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220820032336/https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/28/jan-6-hearing-trump-thought-pence-deserved-chants-to-hang-him-aide-says.html |url-status=live }} Pence has stated that he has no interest in seeking the vice presidential nomination again{{Cite web |last=Oshin |first=Olafimihan |title=Pence on if he'd run as VP again: 'Twice is enough'|url=https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/3753708-pence-on-if-hed-run-as-vp-again-twice-is-enough/ |access-date=November 30, 2022|website=The Hill |language=en |date=November 28, 2022 |archive-date=November 29, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221129112353/https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/3753708-pence-on-if-hed-run-as-vp-again-twice-is-enough/ |url-status=live }} and chose not to endorse Trump.{{Cite news |last1=Svitek |first1=Patrick |last2=LeVine |first2=Marianne |date=March 15, 2024 |title=Mike Pence says he will not endorse Donald Trump for president in 2024 |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/15/pence-trump-no-endorsement-2024/ |access-date=June 18, 2024 |newspaper=Washington Post |language=en-US |issn=0190-8286 |archive-date=June 19, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240619030253/https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/15/pence-trump-no-endorsement-2024/ |url-status=live }}
Trump's anticipated status as the presumptive nominee was solidified upon his victories in the Super Tuesday primaries, which saw Nikki Haley, his last remaining opposition, drop out the following day. Under the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution, members of the electoral college cannot vote for both a presidential and a vice presidential candidate who are from the same state as themselves, to prevent states from picking a favorite son. As Trump currently resides in Florida, the state's electors could not vote for both Trump and his running mate if the running mate also resided in Florida. In 2000, when Texas Governor George W. Bush picked Dick Cheney, who also lived in Texas, Cheney changed his voter registration to Wyoming (where he represented the state in the House of Representatives in the 1980s) to prevent this issue from arising with Texas' critical electoral votes.{{cite web|date=May 25, 2023|last=Fins|first=Antonio|title=Trump-DeSantis 2024 ticket a likely no go? At the end of July, a 2021 interview of Vance with Tucker Carlson of Fox News triggered further backlash at his selection. In the interview, then-Senate-candidate Vance complained that the U.S. was being run by Democrats, corporate oligarchs, and "a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too." He continued, stating "It's just a basic fact — you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC — the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children. And how does it make any sense that we've turned our country over to people who don't really have a direct stake in it?"{{Cite news |last=Treisman |first=Rachel |date=2024-07-29 |title=JD Vance went viral for ‘cat lady’ comments.
