The 2025 New York City mayoral election will be held on November 4, 2025, to elect the mayor of New York City. Incumbent Democratic mayor Eric Adams is running for re-election to a second term in office as an independent. He was indicted on federal corruption charges in September 2024, and has faced calls to resign from office. The Department of Justice ordered prosecutors to dismiss the charges without prejudice in February 2025.{{Cite web |date=February 11, 2025 |title=Justice Department orders charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams dismissed |url=https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/eric-adams-charges-dismissed-rcna191600 |access-date=February 11, 2025 |website=nbcnews.com |language=en}}
Primary elections are scheduled to be held on June 24, 2025, with the early voting period beginning ten days prior. In New York City, primaries are held using ranked-choice voting.{{cite web |title=Primary Election 2025 |work=New York City Board of Elections |access-date=January 26, 2025 |url=https://vote.nyc/election/primary-election-2025}}
Background
Eric Adams was elected mayor of New York City in 2021, narrowly winning a primary election and defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa in the general election. Adams' tenure has been characterized by controversy, with the mayor supporting tough-on-crime policies such as the reintroduction of plainclothes police officers and increased policing in the city's subway system.{{cite news |title=As Adams Toughens on Crime, Some Fear a Return to '90s Era Policing |first1=Katie |last1=Glueck |first2=Ashley |last2=Southall |work=The New York Times |date=March 26, 2022 |access-date=March 29, 2024 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/26/nyregion/broken-windows-eric-adams.html |archive-date=March 30, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240330014901/https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/26/nyregion/broken-windows-eric-adams.html |url-status=live}}{{cite news |title=New data shows just how wrong Democrats are to embrace Eric Adams |first=Zeeshan |last=Aleem |work=NBC News |date=June 6, 2023 |access-date=March 29, 2024 |url=https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/eric-adams-police-report-rcna87952 |archive-date=March 30, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240330014901/https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/eric-adams-police-report-rcna87952 |url-status=live}} Adams has also received criticism for his handling of the migrant housing crisis,{{cite news |title=Eric Adams' dire migrant messaging threatening Dems in pivotal election year |first1=Emily |last1=Ngo |first2=Janaki |last2=Chadha |work=Politico |date=January 8, 2024 |access-date=March 29, 2024 |url=https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/08/eric-adams-migrant-messaging-election-year-00134228 |archive-date=March 30, 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240330014901/https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/08/eric-adams-migrant-messaging-election-year-00134228 |url-status=live}} the FBI investigation into his 2021 campaign,{{Cite web |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/12/nyregion/eric-adams-investigation-turkey-consulate.html |title=F.B.I.
