The area around Constantinople was affected by a major earthquake in AD 447. It caused serious damage to the recently completed Theodosian walls in Constantinople, destroying 57 towers and large stretches of the walls. The historical records contain no mention of casualties directly associated with this earthquake, although many thousands of people were reported to have died in the aftermath due to starvation and a "noxious smell".{{Cite web |last1=Guidoboni |first1=E. |last2=Ferrari |first2=G. |last3=Mariotti |first3=D. |last4=Comastri |first4=A. |last5=Tarabusi |first5=G. |last6=Sgatoni |first6=G. |last7=Valensise |first7=G. |title=Catalogue of Strong Earthquakes in Italy (461 BC – 1997) and Mediterranean Area (760 B.C. – 1500) |url=http://storing.ingv.it/cfti/cfti5/quake.php?M1180IT |publisher=INGV-SGA}}
