57th & 9th is the twelfth solo studio album by British singer-songwriter Sting, his first rock album in 13 years, released on 11 November 2016.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/inside-stings-first-rock-album-in-decades-w429572 |title=Inside Sting's First Rock Album in Decades – How Prince's death, climate change inspired "impulsive" new LP |date= 18 July 2016 |magazine=Rolling Stone |access-date= 21 July 2016}}{{cite web |url=http://consequenceofsound.net/2016/07/sting-announces-new-rock-album-57th-9th/ |title=Sting announces new rock album 57th & 9th – "It's rockier than anything I've done in a while." |date= 18 July 2016 |website=Consequence of Sound |access-date= 21 July 2016}} The album sold over 600,000 copies worldwide in 2016{{cite web|title=Anuario Sgae De Las Artes Escénicas, Musicales Y Audiovisuales 2017 – Música Grabada|url=http://www.anuariossgae.com/anuario2017/anuariopdfs/04_MGRABADA.pdf|language=ES|page=29|access-date=February 28, 2021}} and contains "The Empty Chair" which earned Sting his 4th nomination for Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards (but lost to "City of Stars" from La La Land).
Background and release
The album was recorded over a period of three months. Sting has said of the tight deadline: "Artificially reintroducing that pressure gave the album a kind of urgency it wouldn't have had otherwise."{{cite web|url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2016/11/13/sting-57th-9th-new-album-world-tour/93573124/|title=Exclusive: Sting talks world tour, new album '57th & 9th'|publisher=USA Today}}
The album title is a reference to the New York intersection Sting crossed every day to get to Avatar Studios in Hell's Kitchen where much of the album was recorded.
From late 2015 and throughout the first half of 2016, images of Sting working in the studio were periodically published across his various social media outlets. The resultant album was eventually announced on 18 July 2016. In a teaser video published subsequently, Sting described the album as having a spontaneous feel, featuring "a lot of rock 'n' roll" with themes of searching, travelling, the road and the pull of the unknown.{{Cite web|date=2021-08-01|title=sting.com|url=https://www.sting.com/discography/album/405/Albums|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160907184448/http://www.sting.com:80/discography/album/405/Albums |archive-date=7 September 2016 }}
Music and lyrics
Sting wrote "50,000" the week of Prince's death, and in memory of several famous musicians who died in late 2015 and 2016: Prince, David Bowie, Glenn Frey, and Lemmy.{{Citation |last=Reed |first=Ryan |date= 31 August 2016 |title=Sting Teases '57th & 9th' LP With Hard-Hitting New Song ("I Can't Stop Thinking About You" highlights singer's rock-influenced 12th solo album) |magazine=Rolling Stone |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/sting-teases-57th-9th-lp-with-hard-hitting-new-song-w437363 |access-date= 14 November 2016}}

According to Rolling Stone magazine on 11 November 2016, Sting "offers a kind of travelogue through his own musical past, from the Chaucer-y balladry of 'Heading South on the Great North Road' to 'If You Can’t Love Me,' a mordantly Kafkaesque echo of the jazz rock Sting made in the Eighties."
"Inshallah" is a Middle East-tinged refugee's prayer.{{cite web |url=https://www.npr.org/2016/11/13/501746601/i-have-a-purpose-sting-talks-about-57th-9th-and-why-hes-still-here |title= 'I Have A Purpose': Sting Talks About '57th & 9th' And Why He's Still Here (by NPR Staff) |date= 13 November 2016 |website=npr.org |access-date= 14 November 2016}} The Arabic word "Inshallah" means "If God wills", or in Sting's words: "If it's God's will then it shall be".
"The Empty Chair" is a song inspired by American journalist James Foley who was kidnapped and killed by Daesh (a.k.a. Islamic State of Iraq or ISIS).{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3hx-BJFrUs |title=Sting / Empty Chair / Irving Plaza Fan Club show 11.09.2016 (4:41) |date= 9 November 2016 |website=YouTube |access-date= 13 November 2016}}
