The ASEAN U-23 Championship (formerly AFF U-23 Championship) is an international football competition contested by the national under-23 teams of the member nations of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). The inaugural edition was held in 2005.{{cite web|url=http://www.aseanfootball.org/v3/asean-under-23-2005/#1528173632185-5c172db9-dd53|title=AFF Under 23 Championship|publisher=ASEAN Football Federation|access-date=27 February 2019}}

Background

In 2005, the first edition was held in Bangkok, Thailand as the AFF U-23 Youth Championship. A second edition of the tournament was set to take place in Palembang, Indonesia between 16 and 26 July 2011 but was cancelled due to the main stadium of Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium, which was to be used for the tournament, still being under renovation.{{cite web|url=https://sport.detik.com/sepakbola/liga-indonesia/1676375/aff-u-23-mundur-btn-fokus-ke-tim-senior|title=AFF U-23 Mundur, BTN Fokus ke Tim Senior|trans-title=AFF U-23 Cancelled, BTN Focuses on Senior Team|language=id|publisher=detik.com|date=7 July 2011|access-date=16 July 2011}}{{cite web|url=https://bola.kompas.com/read/2011/07/14/18400941/piala.aff.u-23.batal.digelar.di.jakabaring|title=Piala AFF U-23 Batal Digelar di Jakabaring|trans-title=AFF U-23 Cup Held in Jakabaring is Cancelled|author=Aloysius Gonsaga|language=id|publisher=Kompas|date=14 July 2011|access-date=16 July 2011}}

In 2019, the tournament was then revived as the AFF U-22 Youth Championship with Phnom Penh, Cambodia as the host where it also served as a preparatory tournament for the Southeast Asian Games and AFC U-23 Asian Cup football tournament.{{cite web|url=http://www.aseanfootball.org/v3/aff-u22-lg-cup-contrasting-challenge-in-both-groups/|title=AFF U22 LG Cup: Contrasting Challenge in Both Groups|publisher=ASEAN Football Federation|date=16 February 2019|access-date=27 February 2019}}{{cite web|url=http://www.the-afc.com/competitions/afc-u-23-championship/latest/news/asean-rivals-vie-for-regional-supremacy|title=ASEAN rivals vie for regional supremacy|publisher=Asian Football Confederation|date=16 February 2019|access-date=27 February 2019}}
