From 2014, Awda commanded the US-backed Hazzm Movement in its fight against the Islamic State.

In January 2015, the al-Nusra Front attacked the Hazzm Movement in northern Aleppo countryside, forcing it to dissolve. Awda, together with other rebel leaders, fled to Turkey and went in exile.{{cite news |url=http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-syria-aleppo-idUKKBN0L408E20150131 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151219193334/http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-syria-aleppo-idUKKBN0L408E20150131 |url-status=dead |archive-date=December 19, 2015 |title=Western-backed rebels join Aleppo alliance - Syria monitor |date=31 January 2015 |accessdate=9 February 2015 |work=Reuters}}

On 16 December 2016, Awda and other leaders of groups ousted by al-Nusra declared their willingness to return to Syria. Their statement was handwritten and signed by Awda, Jamal Maarouf (Syria Revolutionaries Front), Mithqal al-Abdullah (Ansar Brigades) and Youssef al-Hassan (Haq al-Muqatila Front).{{Cite web |title=مبادرة مفتوحة من ثلاثة بنود تعيد جمال معروف إلى الواجهة |url=https://www.enabbaladi.net/610258/مبادرة-مفتوحة-من-ثلاثة-بنود-تعيد-جمال-م |date=20 October 2020 |website=Enab Baladi |language=ar |access-date=8 December 2024 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240804181038/https://www.enabbaladi.net/610258/مبادرة-مفتوحة-من-ثلاثة-بنود-تعيد-جمال-م |archive-date=4 August 2024 |url-status=live}}
