During the war, the group was mainly stationed in the mountainous areas of Northwestern Iran, as they had experience in both mountain and irregular warfare from the Soviet-Afghan War.{{Cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=54gyRnhIugkC&q=half+iraqi+half+Hazara&pg=PA267 |title=Peoples on the Move: Introducing the Nomads of the World |isbn=9781903689059 |access-date=2018-06-11 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180612140702/https://books.google.com.au/books?id=54gyRnhIugkC&pg=PA267&lpg=PA267&dq=half+iraqi+half+Hazara&source=bl&ots=f0KHLyaHMK&sig=qeiaCS74suQIhT58d-IE0r7WdzY&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjr5K__ssvbAhWEx7wKHZccDmEQ6AEwEXoECAUQAQ#v=onepage&q=half%20iraqi%20half%20Hazara&f=false#v=onepage&q=half%20iraqi%20half%20Hazara&f=false |archive-date=2018-06-12 |url-status=live |last1=Phillips |first1=David J. |year=2001 |publisher=William Carey Library }}{{cite web|url=http://www.mashreghnews.ir/fa/news/418855/%D8%AA%DB%8C%D9%BE-%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%85%DB%8C%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%84%D8%B4%DA%A9%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D8%AF|title=تیپ فاطمیون، لشکر شد|first=مشرق نیوز : آخرین اخبار ایران و جهان|last=mashreghnews.ir|date=20 May 2015|access-date=2017-08-18|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161024211226/http://www.mashreghnews.ir/fa/news/418855/%D8%AA%DB%8C%D9%BE-%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%85%DB%8C%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%84%D8%B4%DA%A9%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D8%AF|archive-date=2016-10-24|url-status=live}}{{cite web|url=http://qasemsoleimani.ir/article/3509.html|title=لشکر "فاطميون" چگونه شکل گرفت؟ - سرلشکرقاسم سلیمانی - Qasem Soleimani|access-date=2017-08-18|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161007092206/http://qasemsoleimani.ir/article/3509.html|archive-date=2016-10-07|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|url=http://af.farsnews.com/culture/news/13940705000511|title=روایت تیپ 300 نفره "ابوذر" که همگی افغانستانی بودند - FarsNews Agency|access-date=2017-08-18|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170819021555/http://af.farsnews.com/culture/news/13940705000511|archive-date=2017-08-19|url-status=live}}

History

In the early years after the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Shia Afghan militias, collectively known as the Tehran Eight, fought against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and the Soviet Union's military which supported the DRA. During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, they aligned with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as the Abuzar Brigade to battle the Iraqis, suffering significant casualties throughout the conflict.{{cite book |last=Uskowi|first=Nader|author-link= |date=2018 |title=Temperature Rising: Iran's Revolutionary Guards and Wars in the Middle East |url= |location= |publisher=Rowman & Littlefield Publishers|page=132|isbn=}} During the Iran–Iraq war, fighters of the Abuzar Brigade were stationed in the mountainous areas of Northwestern Iran, as they had experience in mountain and irregular warfare from their war with the Soviets.{{cite web |last=mashreghnews.ir |first=مشرق نیوز : آخرین اخبار ایران و جهان |date=20 May 2015 |title=تیپ فاطمیون، لشکر شد |url=http://www.mashreghnews.ir/fa/news/418855/%D8%AA%DB%8C%D9%BE-%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%85%DB%8C%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%84%D8%B4%DA%A9%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D8%AF |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161024211226/http://www.mashreghnews.ir/fa/news/418855/%D8%AA%DB%8C%D9%BE-%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%85%DB%8C%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%84%D8%B4%DA%A9%D8%B1-%D8%B4%D8%AF |archive-date=2016-10-24 |access-date=2016-07-18}}{{cite web |title=لشکر "فاطميون" چگونه شکل گرفت؟ - سرلشکرقاسم سلیمانی - Qasem Soleimani |url=http://qasemsoleimani.ir/article/3509.html |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20161007092206/http://qasemsoleimani.ir/article/3509.html |archive-date=2016-10-07 |access-date=2016-07-18}}{{cite web |title=روایت تیپ 300 نفره "ابوذر" که همگی افغانستانی بودند - FarsNews Agency |url=http://af.farsnews.ir/culture/news/13940705000511 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170819021555/http://af.farsnews.ir/culture/news/13940705000511 |archive-date=2017-08-19 |access-date=2016-07-18}}
