The name is derived from the Greek words α (a), meaning "not", and δήλος (delos), meaning "visible." It refers to the difficulties Linnaeus experienced interpreting the genus.{{cite thesis |chapter-url=http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/315 |title=Phylogenetics, Conservation, and Historical Biogeography of the West Indian Members of the Adelieae (Euphorbiaceae) |first=Brett |last=Jestrow |degree=Ph.D. |publisher=Florida International University |year=2010 |chapter=Introduction |access-date=2011-08-08}}
