Career

On June 17, 2020, Therrien was called a "racist" by New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh after Therrien said no to a proposed motion to address systemic racism and discrimination in the RCMP; his position was the same as his party, which was to wait for the RCMP to conduct its own evaluation that is currently happening. Singh was subsequently removed from the House of Commons after refusing to apologize.{{Cite web|url=https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/singh-stands-by-calling-bloc-mp-a-racist-after-being-removed-from-house-1.4988470|title= Singh stands by calling Bloc MP a racist after being removed from House|website=ctvnews.ca|date= 17 June 2020|access-date=17 June 2020}}

From 2021 to 2025 he served as the Bloc Québécois House Leader and critic for democratic institutions and single tax returns in the Shadow Cabinet.{{Cite web |last=Lévesque |first=Catherine |date=October 5, 2021 |title=Bloc Québécois announces shadow cabinet |url=https://montrealgazette.com/news/national/election-2021/bloc-quebecois-announces-shadow-cabinet |website=Montreal Gazette}}

In the 2025 Canadian federal election, he was unseated by Liberal candidate Jacques Ramsay.{{Cite web |last=Canadienne |first=La Presse |date=2025-04-29 |title=Alerte: Alain Therrien, leader à la Chambre du Bloc, défait dans La Prairie-Atateken |url=https://lactualite.com/actualites/alerte-alain-therrien-leader-a-la-chambre-du-bloc-defait-dans-la-prairie-atateken/ |access-date=2025-04-29 |website=L’actualité |language=fr-CA}}
