Albinaria idaea is a species of air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Clausiliidae, the door snails.MolluscaBase 2018. Albinaria idaea (L. Pfeiffer, 1850). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1027388 on 2019-01-20
Two percostate populations are known. Based on shell characters, Albinaria idaea seems closely related to Albinaria ariadne, except that Albinaria ariadne has a weak basalis. It has been stated that further research is necessary to clarify the status of Albinaria ariadne.Welter-Schultes, F. W. 2010. Revision of the genus Albinaria in Crete (Greece): presence of geographically variable monotypic and polytypic species (Gastropoda: Clausiliidae). Distribution
Subspecies
There is no consensus concerning the identification of subspecies in Albinaria idaea. Two contradictory systems have been proposed:
- In 1977, NordsieckNordsieck, H. 1977a. Zur Anatomie und Systematik der Clausilien, XVII. Taxonomische Revision des Genus Albinaria Vest. Archiv für Molluskenkunde 107 (4/6): 285-307; Frankfurt am Main.Nordsieck, H. 1977b. Zur Anatomie und Systematik der Clausilien, XVIII. Neue Taxa rezenter Clausilien. Archiv für Molluskenkunde 108 (1/3):73-107. Frankfurt am Main. distinguished 6 subspecies, of which one (Albinaria idaea zeus) was later rejected by Nordsieck in 1998.Nordsieck, H. 1998. A new subspecies of Albinaria idaea ( L. Pfeiffer, 1850) (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora: Clausiliidae). Heldia, 2 (5/6): 123-126, pl. 17; München. In 2017, one additional subspecies (Albinaria idaea letoana) was described by Nordsieck.Nordsieck, H. 2017. New Species Taxa of the Genus Albinaria Vest (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora: Clausiliidae. in Crete. Conchylia 48(1-2):9-30 Öhringen.
- In contrast, Welter Schultes and other authors did not agree with Nordsiecks subspecies classification and proposed to distinguish no subspecies at all.
Molecular genetic analyses have to clarify the status of the subspecies described.
