Background

In the 2016–17 season, Arsenal won the FA Cup for a record thirteenth time-and a record seventh under Arsène Wenger,{{cite web |url=https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39984089 |title=Arsenal 2–1 Chelsea |last=McNulty |first=Phil |date=27 May 2017 |website=bbc.com |publisher=BBC Sport |access-date=27 July 2022 }} who became the most successful manager in the history of the competition, but fell out of the top four in the Premier League for the first time since before Wenger arrived in 1996, finishing fifth to end their 19-year run in the UEFA Champions League. After another unspectacular league season the following year, Wenger departed Arsenal on 13 May 2018, ending a 22-year, trophy–laden association with the club.{{cite web |url=https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44020157 |title=Huddersfield Town 0–1 Arsenal |last=Begley |first=Emlyn |date=13 May 2018 |website=bbc.com |publisher=BBC Sport |access-date=27 July 2022 }}

Unai Emery was named as the club's new head coach on 23 May 2018.{{cite web |url=https://www.arsenal.com/news/welcome-unai |title=Welcome Unai |date=23 May 2018 |website=arsenal.com |publisher=Arsenal F.C. |access-date=27 July 2022 }}{{cite web |url=https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11382525/arsenal-confirm-appointment-of-unai-emery-as-new-head-coach |title=Unai Emery announced as new Arsenal head coach |last=Shread |first=Joe |date=23 May 2018 |website=skysports.com |publisher=Sky Sports |access-date=27 July 2022 }} In Emery's first season, Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League and as runner-up in the UEFA Europa League.{{cite web |url=https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/0251-0e9ce2d466b4-6403225af104-1000--chelsea-win-the-2019-uefa-europa-league/ |title=Chelsea win the 2019 UEFA Europa League |date=29 May 2019 |website=UEFA |access-date=27 July 2022 }} On 29 November 2019, Emery was sacked after Arsenal had gone seven games without a win in all competitions, which was their worst run in 27 years; and former player and assistant first-team coach Freddie Ljungberg was appointed as interim head coach.{{cite web |url=https://www.arsenal.com/news/unai-emery-leaves-club |title=Unai Emery leaves club |date=29 November 2019 |website=arsenal.com |publisher=Arsenal F.C. |access-date=27 July 2022 }}{{cite web |url=https://www.espn.com/soccer/arsenal/story/3999924/arsenal-sack-emery-after-worst-run-for-27-years-ljungberg-named-caretaker-manager |title=Arsenal sack Emery after worst run for 27 years; Ljungberg named caretaker manager |date=29 November 2019 |website=espn.com |publisher=ESPN |access-date=27 July 2022 }}
