Amazon Go is a chain of convenience stores in the United States and the United Kingdom, operated by the online retailer Amazon. The stores are cashierless, thus partially automated (having an added option in some locations to manually checkout if desired), with customers having the ability to purchase products without being checked out by a cashier or using a self-checkout station.{{cite news |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/05/technology/amazon-moves-to-cut-checkout-line-promoting-a-grab-and-go-experience.html |title=Amazon Moves to Cut Checkout Line, Promoting a Grab-and-Go Experience |work=The New York Times |author=Nick Wingfield |date=December 5, 2016 |access-date=March 8, 2017 }}{{cite news |url=https://www.theverge.com/2016/12/5/13842592/amazon-go-new-cashier-less-convenience-store |title=Amazon just launched a cashier-free convenience store |work=The Verge |author=Natt Garun |date=December 5, 2016 |access-date=March 8, 2017 |publisher=Vox Media}} As of 2023, there are 43 open and announced store locations in Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, London and New York City.{{Cite web|url=https://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=16008589011|title=List of Amazon Go Locations on Amazon.com|date=July 22, 2019|website=GeekWire|language=en-US|access-date=August 14, 2019}}

Amazon Go stores were conceptualized and tested by a team of Amazon executives, who constructed a {{convert|15000|sqft}} mock supermarket in a rented warehouse in Seattle, before revealing the work to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2015. The first store, located in the company's Day 1 building, opened to employees on December 5, 2016, and to the public on January 22, 2018. The flagship store sells products such as prepared foods, meal kits, limited groceries and liquor.{{Cite news |url=https://www.seattletimes.com/business/amazon/amazon-go-cashierless-convenience-store-opening-to-the-public/ |title=Amazon Go cashierless convenience store opening to the public |last=Day |first=Matt |date=January 21, 2018 |work=Seattle Times|access-date=January 21, 2018}} A larger variant, Amazon Go Grocery, opened in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood on February 25, 2020. Technology and implementation

Amazon described Go stores to have used several technologies, including computer vision, deep learning algorithms, and sensor fusion for the purchase, checkout, and payment steps associated with a retail transaction,{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrmMk1Myrxc |title=Introducing Amazon Go and the world's most advanced shopping technology |date=December 5, 2016 |publisher=Amazon |via=YouTube}} which was later revealed to be supported remotely by a team of people in India. The store concept is seen as a revolutionary model that relies on the prevalence of smartphones and geofencing technology to streamline the customer experience, as well as supply chain and inventory management.{{Cite journal |last1=Grewal |first1=Dhruv |last2=Roggeveen |first2=Anne L. |last3=Nordfält |first3=Jens |date=March 2017 |title=The Future of Retailing |journal=Journal of Retailing |volume=93 |issue=1 |pages=1–6 |doi=10.1016/j.jretai.2016.12.008|doi-access=free }} However, public rollout of the Seattle Amazon Go prototype location was delayed due to issues with the sensors' ability to track multiple users or objects within the store,{{cite web |url=https://www.recode.net/2017/3/27/15072084/amazons-go-future-store-delayed-opening |title=Amazon's store of the future is delayed. The Amazon Go app for iOS and Android links to their Amazon account and is the primary method of paying for items at the store, alongside cash at certain locations. The app is required to enter the store, which has turnstiles that scan a QR code generated on the app.{{Cite news |url=https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/21/amazon-go-automated-grocery-store-is-poised-to-launch.html |title=Amazon's automated grocery store will launch Monday after a year of false starts |last=Bosa |first=Deirdre |date=January 21, 2018 |work=CNBC|access-date=January 21, 2018}}{{Cite news |last=Angus |first=Isabela |date=August 23, 2019 |title=SF 'Cashless Ban' FAQ: How to pay cash at Amazon Go, and more questions answered |url=https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Cashless-ban-FAQ-food-truck-amazon-go-no-cash-14373909.php |work=SF Gate |agency=Associated Press |access-date=November 5, 2019}} The app allows users to add others to their Amazon account, so a family's purchases can be charged to the same bill.{{cite news |url=https://apnews.com/b242616659954f08966b1e68cd479444 |title=Amazon opens store with no cashiers, lines or registers |date=January 22, 2018 |work=Associated Press News|access-date=January 22, 2018}} The ceiling of the store has multiple cameras and store shelves have weight sensors, to detect which item(s) a customer took.{{Cite news |url=http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/amazon-go-grocery-store-1.4497862 |title=Amazon's 1st high-tech grocery store opens to the public |date=January 22, 2018 |work=CBC News|access-date=January 22, 2018}} If a customer takes an item off the shelf, it will be added to the customer's virtual cart.
