Amos 3

The original text was written in Hebrew. This chapter is divided into 15 verses. Some early manuscripts containing the text of this chapter in Hebrew are of the Masoretic Text tradition, which includes the Codex Cairensis (895), the Petersburg Codex of the Prophets (916), Aleppo Codex (10th century), Codex Leningradensis (1008).{{sfn|Würthwein|1995|pp=35-37}} Fragments cumulatively containing all verses of this chapter in Hebrew were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls including 4Q78 (4QXII^c; 75–50 BCE) with extant verses 1–15;{{sfn|Ulrich|2010|pp=604–605}}[http://thewaytoyahuweh.com/dead-sea-scrolls/general-info/#amos Dead sea scrolls – Amos]{{sfn|Fitzmyer|2008|p=38}} and 4Q82 (4QXII^g; 25 BCE) with extant verses 1–2.{{sfn|Ulrich|2010|p=604}}{{sfn|Fitzmyer|2008|p=39}}

There is also a translation into Koine Greek known as the Septuagint, made in the last few centuries BCE. • "Children of Israel": not just the ten tribes, but "the whole family brought up from Egypt"; all the descendants of Jacob, including Judah and Benjamin (cf. {{bibleverse|Jeremiah|8:3|9}}; {{bibleverse|Micah|2:3|9}}, on "family" for the nation), but the prophecy refers mainly to the ten tribes, as the majority of the nation.Robert Jamieson, Andrew Robert Fausset; David Brown. The New International Version translates this verse as "Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?"{{bibleverse|Amos|3:3|NIV}}: NIV

Darby relates this comment to Israel and God, and by extension to the individual, "our walk", with God. Alexander Maclaren notes that two friends can journey together without having to agree on everything. This verse is treated as Amos' first reference to the idea of a "remnant",Jerusalem Bible (1966), Footnote m at Amos 3:12 to which he refers again in Amos 5:15 and more completely in Amos 9:8:
