Androcalva is a genus of 33 species of flowering plants in the family Malvaceae and is endemic to continental Australia.

Description

Plants in the genus Androcalva are shrubs or trees and have stems, leaves and flowers covered with star-like hairs. The leaves are simple, often with irregularly-toothed or lobed edges, and with ligules at the base but that are sometimes deciduous. The flowers are bisexual, arranged in cymes opposite leaf axils, with 5 sepals, 5 petals, 5 stamens, and 5 staminodes sometimes with 3 lobes. The fruit is a bristly capsule with five valves, and is covered with star-shaped hairs.{{cite web |last1=Messina |first1=Andre |last2=Stajsic |first2=Val |title=Androcalva |url=https://vicflora.rbg.vic.gov.au/flora/taxon/c09fe2a4-b106-420d-ad06-6628ff2a5304 |publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria |access-date=5 April 2023}}{{FloraBase | name = Androcalva | id = 40900}}{{cite web |last1=Conn |first1=Barry J. |title=Androcalva |url=https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&showsyn=&dist=&constat=&lvl=gn&name=Commersonia |publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney |access-date=10 December 2020}}{{cite book |last1=Blake |first1=Trevor L. |title=Lantern bushes of Australia ; Thomasias & allied genera : a field and horticultural guide |date=2021 |publisher=Australian Plants Society, Keilor Plains Group |location=Victoria |isbn=9780646839301 |pages=88–91}}

Taxonomy

The genus Androcalva was first formally described in 2011 by Carolyn Wilkins and Barbara Whitlock in Australian Systematic Botany and comprises species formerly included in Commersonia (22) and Rulingia (4) as well as 7 new species.{{cite journal|author1=Wilkins, Carolyn F. |author2=Whitlock, Barbara A. |year=2011|title=A new Australian genus, Androcalva, separated from Commersonia (Malvaceae s.l. or Byttneriaceae)|journal=Australian Systematic Botany|volume=24|issue=5|pages=284–349|doi=10.1071/SB10032}} The name Androcalva means "bald male", referring to the glabrous staminodes.{{cite book |last1=Sharr |first1=Francis Aubi |last2=George |first2=Alex |title=Western Australian Plant Names and Their Meanings |date=2019 |publisher=Four Gables Press |location=Kardinya, WA |isbn=9780958034180 |page=59 |edition=3rd}}
