Taxonomy

The genus name comes from the Latin form of Greek words {{lang|el|ἄνῑσον}} anison, {{lang|el|ἄνησον}} anīson, {{lang|el|ἄνηθον}} anīthon and {{lang|el|ἄνητον}} anīton, which all meant "dill" and "anise";{{cite encyclopedia |url=https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus:text:1999.04.0059:entry=anethum |title=ănēthum |last1= Lewis |first1= Charlton T. |last2= Short |first2= Charles |dictionary= A Latin Dictionary |publisher= Perseus Digital Library |date = 1879 }} anise is now placed in a different genus named Pimpinella.
