Ashmoun ({{langx|ar|أشمون}}) is a city in the south of Monufia Governorate, Egypt.

The city's Arabic name comes from Coptic Chmoumi ({{Langx|cop|ϭⲙⲟⲩⲙⲓ}}), of unclear etymology, that could be possibly related to a Coptic word for "spring, source" ({{Langx|cop|ⲙⲟⲩⲙⲓ}}).{{Cite web |last=Peust |first=Carsten |title=Die Toponyme vorarabischen Ursprungs im modernen Ägypten |url=http://www.peust.de/ortsnamen_original.pdf |page=13}} It was also known as Ashmoun Gerisat ({{Langx|ar|اشمون جريسات}}), a calque of {{Langx|cop|ϭⲙⲟⲩⲙⲓ ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡϯϩⲟⲧ|lit=Chmoumi of Ptihot}}, where Ptihot is a name of a nearby town, modern Gerays ({{Langx|ar|جريس}}).{{Cite book |last=Timm |first=Stefan |title=Das christlich-koptische Agypten in arabischer Zeit |pages=192–193}}{{Cite book |last=Timm |first=Stefan |title=Das christlich-koptische Agypten in arabischer Zeit |pages=2061–2062}}
