The New York Times called the album "raw and tumultuous, hardly the work of someone settling into an easy middle age of refinement."{{cite news |last1=Watrous |first1=Peter |title=Two Jazz Veterans Work with New Recruits |work=The New York Times |date=11 Sep 1988 |page=A32}} The Boston Globe and The San Diego Union-Tribune considered it one of the best jazz albums of 1988.{{cite news |title=1988 Records |work=The Boston Globe |date=22 Dec 1988 |department=Calendar |page=10}}{{cite news |last1=Varga |first1=George |title=Best Jazz Albums of 1988 |work=The San Diego Union-Tribune |date=1 Jan 1989 |page=E3}}

The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow states: "This single-CD (formerly a double-LP) from Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition contains music that mixes together advanced hard bop, fusion, M-Base funk and avant-garde jazz... The results are sometimes unsettling but rarely dull, well worth several listens."
