History

In 2001 UTI Bank agreed to merge with Global Trust Bank, but the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) withheld approval and the merger did not take place. In 2004, the RBI put Global Trust under moratorium and supervised its merger with Oriental Bank of Commerce. In 2025, Axis Bank has partnered with J.P. Morgan to provide real-time U.S. dollar payment capabilities for commercial clients in India. This partnership, facilitated by J.P. Morgan's blockchain and digital assets unit, Kinexys, is a first for any Indian companies, allowing them to make or receive dollar payments at any time. The new service will be available to clients based in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). Currently, cross-border payments are settled on the same day, but the new system will allow companies to make payments at any time, including weekends. An Indian online magazine conducted a sting operation which was publicised along with 2013 videos evidence showing a wide range of violations and money-laundering schemes by top officials at a number of Indian banks, including Axis Bank.
