Scott Yanow of AllMusic states, "Hawkins teamed up with the personable trumpeter Clark Terry for this upbeat set of solid swing. Terry in particular is in exuberant form on "Feedin' the Bean" and a delightful version of "Don't Worry About Me", but Hawkins's playing (particularly on the trumpeter's ballad "Michelle") is also in fine form".{{allMusic|first=Scott|last=Yanow|class=album|id=mw0000596836|title=Back in Bean's Bag – Review|accessdate= July 10, 2017}}
