History

In 1634, Curaçao was conquered by the Dutch West Indies Company, and the city of Punda was founded. In order to feed the population, plantations were established on the island.{{cite web|url=https://canoncuracao.cw/11-ontwikkeling-nederzettingen-en-barios-buiten-willemstad/ |title=11. De ontwikkeling van bewoning buiten Willemstad|website=Canon of Curaçao|access-date=22 April 2021|language=nl}} The plantations were small-scale due to the infertile ground and produced yams, mangos, oranges, or raised livestock.{{cite web|url=https://knipselkrant-curacao.com/de-slaven-opstand-van-1795/ |title=De slaven Opstand van 1795|website=Knipselkrant Curaçao|access-date=22 April 2021|language=nl}} Bandariba later attracted free and freed slaves who settled in the vacant land.{{cite news|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/view?query=Bandariba&facets%5Bperiode%5D%5B%5D=1%7C20e_eeuw%7C1970-1979%7C&page=1&coll=ddd&identifier=ddd:010461108:mpeg21:a0063&resultsidentifier=ddd:010461108:mpeg21:a0063&rowid=3|title=Sambubu|website=Amigoe via Delpher|date=24 February 1972|language=nl}}
