Barrio Sur is a barrio (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay. It borders Ciudad Vieja to the west, the central business district to the north, Palermo to the east and the coastline to the south.
Politically located in the Municipality B, along with Palermo, it is the place where most of the Uruguayan Carnival festivities take place.{{Cite web |date=2020-01-30 |title=Llegan los tambores a Barrio Sur y Palermo |url=https://montevideo.gub.uy/noticias/cultura/llegan-los-tambores-a-barrio-sur-y-palermo |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=Intendencia de Montevideo. |language=es}} In the first half of the 20th century, the neighbourhood became a melting pot of different cultures, due to the immigrants who settled in the area.
History
The neighborhood emerged in the first half of the 19th century, when the city walls were demolished, and a part of the population –mainly Afro-Uruguayans, who had been freed after the abolition of slavery in 1842– began to settle in the southern area of the city, living in tenements called conventillos, such as the Mediomundo.{{Cite web |date=2008-11-29 |title=Medio Mundo, sur, conventillo y después, un libro de Milita Alfaro |url=https://www.lr21.com.uy/cultura/342734-medio-mundo-sur-conventillo-y-despues-un-libro-de-milita-alfaro |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=LARED21 |language=es}}
The first inhabitants of the neighborhood maintained some of the rituals of their countries of origin. From these rituals the Candombe was born. Starting at the end of the 19th century and during the first half of the 20th century, the area was inhabited by thousands of European immigrants.{{Cite web |date=2021-11-06 |title=El desalojo de los conventillos Ansina y Mediomundo: racismo, dictadura y codicia inmobiliaria |url=https://ladiaria.com.uy/lento/articulo/2021/11/el-desalojo-de-los-conventillos-ansina-y-mediomundo-racismo-dictadura-y-codicia-inmobiliaria/ |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=la diaria |language=es-UY}} Due to this, the neighborhood became a melting pot of Afro-Uruguayan, Spanish, Italian, and Jewish cultures.{{Cite web |title=Historia de los barrios: Barrio Sur y Palermo |url=https://amec.uy/blog/cultura/historia-de-los-barrios-barrio-sur-y-palermo/ |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=amec.uy |language=es}}
The southwest area of the neighborhood was part of El Bajo, an urban area that also included part of the south of Ciudad Vieja, and which contained a large number of cabarets and brothels.{{Cite web |last=Redacción |title=El Bajo de Ciudad Vieja |url=https://www.elobservador.com.uy/nota/el-bajo-de-ciudad-vieja--20151027500 |url-status=live |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20180920083500/https://www.elobservador.com.uy/nota/el-bajo-de-ciudad-vieja--20151027500 |archive-date=2018-09-20 |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=El Observador}} It was demolished in the 1930s due to the construction of the south rambla.{{Cite web |title=Brecha, la desmemoria de Montevideo |url=http://viajes.elpais.com.uy/2014/12/08/brecha-la-desmemoria-de-montevideo/ |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=viajes.elpais.com.uy |language=en-ES}}

It is central to the Carnival festivities and Candombe is regularly played during the weekends.{{Cite web |title=PATRIMONIO EN BARRIO SUR {{!}} Municipio B |url=https://municipiob.montevideo.gub.uy/patrimonio-en-barrio-sur |access-date=2023-12-06 |website=municipiob.montevideo.gub.uy}}
