Ferraro successfully auditioned for the fourth season of The X Factor in 2012, singing "Skinny Love", with a treatment based on the version by Birdy.{{cite web |url=http://au.tv.yahoo.com/x-factor/contestants/bella-ferraro/ |title=The X-Factor Australia Contestant – Bella Ferraro |work=The X Factor Australia |publisher=Yahoo!7 |date=13 September 2012 |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120915025031/http://au.tv.yahoo.com/x-factor/contestants/bella-ferraro/ |archivedate=15 September 2012 |url-status=dead |df=dmy }} She was inspired to audition for the show after seeing the success of One Direction on the UK version. During the super boot camp stage, Ferraro forgot the lyrics to the two songs she performed: Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" and Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over".{{cite web|url=http://www.thehothits.com/news/34240/x-factor-australia%27s-top-twelve-revealed|title=X Factor Australia's Top Twelve Revealed|work=The Hot Hits Live from LA|publisher=MCM Entertainment|date=13 September 2012|accessdate=14 September 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120921033203/http://www.thehothits.com/news/34240/x-factor-australia%27s-top-twelve-revealed|archive-date=21 September 2012|url-status=dead|df=dmy-all}} For the first live performance show on 17 September 2012, Ferraro sang Matt Corby's "Brother" and received a mixed response from the judges.
