BioSystems is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering experimental, computational, and theoretical research that links biology, evolution, and the information processing sciences. It was established in 1967 as Currents in Modern Biology by Robert G. Grenell and published by North-Holland Publishing Company out of Amsterdam until North-Holland merged with Elsevier in 1970.{{cite book |last1=Fredriksson |first1=Einar H. |title=A Century of Science Publishing |date=2001 |publisher=IOS Press |location=Amsterdam |pages=61–76 |url=https://ebooks.iospress.nl/pdf/doi/10.3233/978-1-58603-148-0-61 |access-date=10 October 2023 |chapter=The Dutch Publishing Scene: Elsevier and North-Holland|doi=10.3233/978-1-58603-148-0-61 }} Grenell wrote of his purpose in founding the journal, {{Blockquote|text=It has become necessary to develop a new language of biology; a new mathematics, and to strip biological theory and experiment of their classical approaches, assumptions and limitations. It is such considerations which underlie the establishment of this journal.{{cite journal |last1=Grennell |first1=Robert G. |title=Editorial Note |journal=Currents in Modern Biology |date=1967 |volume=1 |issue=1 |page=1}}}}

In 1972 the journal was renamed Currents in Modern Biology: Bio Systems, which was shortened to BioSystems in 1974. Previous editors include J.P. Schadé, Alan W. Schwartz, Sidney W. Fox, Michael Conrad,{{cite journal |doi=10.1016/S0303-2647(01)00154-X |title=In Memoriam — Michael Conrad |journal=Biosystems |volume=61 |pages=3–4 |year=2001|issue=1 |doi-access= |bibcode=2001BiSys..61....3. }} Lynn Margulis,{{cite journal |doi=10.1016/j.biosystems.2011.12.003 |pmid=22197791 |title=Lynn Margulis (1938–2011) |journal=Biosystems |volume=107 |issue=2 |pages=65 |year=2012 |last1=Fogel |first1=Gary B. |last2=Schwartz |first2=Alan W. |bibcode=2012BiSys.107...65F }} David B. Fogel, Gary B. Fogel, George Kampis, Francisco Lara-Ochoa, Koichiro Matsuno, Ray Paton, and W. Mike L. Holcombe.

According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2023 impact factor of 2.0.{{cite book |year=2021 |chapter=BioSystems |title=2020 Journal Citation Reports |publisher=Clarivate |edition=Science |series=Web of Science |title-link=Journal Citation Reports}}
