History

Bittern station opened on 17 December 1889, when the railway line from Hastings was extended to Stony Point. Like the town itself, the station was named after the bird family of the same name.{{cite web|url=https://www.victorianplaces.com.au/bittern|title=Bittern|publisher=Victorian Places|accessdate=9 January 2023}}

Between 1921 and 1953, Bittern was the junction for a branch line to Red Hill.{{cite web|url=http://www.vicsig.net/infrastructure/line/Red-Hill|title=Red Hill Line|website=vicsig.net|access-date=3 March 2023}}

On 22 June 1981, the passenger service between Frankston and Stony Point was withdrawn and replaced with a bus service, with the line between Long Island Junction and Stony Point also closing on the same day. On 16 September 1984, promotional trips for the reopening of the line began and,{{cite magazine|date=November 1984|title=Traffic|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|page=344}} on 27 September of that year, the passenger service was reinstated. Also occurring in that year, flashing light signals were provided at the nearby Woolleys Road level crossing, located in the down direction of the station.{{cite magazine|date=March 1992|title=Flashing Lights and Boom Barriers Dates of Installation|author=David Langley|magazine=Somersault|publisher=Signalling Record Society Victoria|pages=26–32}} In February 1986, the current passenger shelters were provided, replacing the original timber station building.{{cite magazine|date=June 1986|title=Works|magazine=Newsrail|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society|page=188}}{{cite web|url=http://www.stationspast.net/victoria/stony-point-line/bittern/|title=Bittern|website=When there were Stations|access-date=7 May 2023}}

In 1991, a siding at the station was abolished.

In 2010, boom barriers were provided at the Woolleys Road level crossing.{{cite web|url=https://vicsig.net/infrastructure/pcr/F0691|title=F0691: Woolleys Road (Urquhart Crescent)|website=vicsig.net|access-date=3 March 2023}}{{cite magazine|date=January 2011|title=Signalling Alterations|magazine=Somersault|publisher=Signalling Record Society Victoria|page=2}}
