Bitwarden is a freemium open-source password management service that is used to store sensitive information, such as website credentials, in an encrypted vault.
Functionalities
Bitwarden uses zero-knowledge encryption, meaning the company cannot see its users' data. This is achieved by end-to-end encrypting data with AES-CBC 256-bit and by using PBKDF2 SHA-256/Argon2id to derive the encryption key.{{cite web |title=Encryption {{!}} Bitwarden Help & Support |work=Bitwarden.com |url= https://bitwarden.com/help/what-encryption-is-used/ |url-status=live |access-date=22 February 2023 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20230222185152/https://bitwarden.com/help/what-encryption-is-used/ |archive-date=22 February 2023}}{{Cite web |title=How End-to-End Encryption Paves the Way for Zero Knowledge |url= https://bitwarden.com/blog/end-to-end-encryption-and-zero-knowledge/ |access-date=7 June 2024 |work=Bitwarden.com}}
To log in, a user can use an email-address and password combination, biometric authentication, two-factor authentication (2FA), passkey, single sign-on, or passwordless login via notification approval on a mobile/desktop device.{{Cite web |date=30 September 2020 |title=Bitwarden launches SSO authentication to integrate password security with identity providers |url= https://bitwarden.com/blog/post/bitwarden-launches-sso-authentication/ |url-status=live |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20220427191331/https://bitwarden.com/blog/bitwarden-launches-sso-authentication/ |archive-date=27 April 2022 |work=Bitwarden Blog}}{{cite web |date=23 February 2023 |title=Access Your Bitwarden Vault Without a Password |url= https://bitwarden.com/blog/access-your-bitwarden-vault-without-a-password/ |url-status=live |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20230731113501/https://bitwarden.com/blog/access-your-bitwarden-vault-without-a-password/ |archive-date=31 July 2023 |work=The Bitwarden Blog}}

Third-party security audits are conducted annually and a vulnerability disclosure program is also established.
In June 2018, Cliqz performed a privacy and security review of the Bitwarden for Firefox browser extension and concluded that it would not negatively impact their users. In October of that year, Bitwarden completed a security assessment, code audit, and cryptographic analysis from third-party security auditing firm Cure53.{{cite web |date=12 November 2018 |title=Bitwarden Completes Third-party Security Audit |url= https://blog.bitwarden.com/bitwarden-completes-third-party-security-audit-c1cc81b6d33 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20181112153110/https://blog.bitwarden.com/bitwarden-completes-third-party-security-audit-c1cc81b6d33 |archive-date=12 November 2018 |access-date=26 November 2018 |work=The Bitwarden Blog}}{{cite web |date=13 November 2018 |title=Results of Bitwarden security audit published |work=Ghacks Technology News |url= https://www.ghacks.net/2018/11/13/results-of-bitwarden-security-audit-published/ |access-date=26 November 2018}}{{cite web |date=12 November 2018 |title=Bitwarden Passes Third Party Security Audit |url= https://www.macobserver.com/news/bitwarden-security-audit/ |access-date=26 November 2018 |work=The Mac Observer}}{{Cite web |last1=Heiderich |first1=Mario |last2=Inführ |first2=Alex |last3=Kobeissi |first3=Nadim |last4=Hippert |first4=Norman |last5=Kinugawa |first5=Masato |date=8 November 2018 |title=Pentest-Report: Bitwarden Password Manager 11.2018 |work=Cure53.com |url= https://cure53.de/pentest-report_bitwarden.pdf |url-status=live |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20190526020419/https://cure53.de/pentest-report_bitwarden.pdf |archive-date=26 May 2019 |access-date=2 March 2021}}
In July 2020, Bitwarden completed another security audit from security firm Insight Risk Consulting to evaluate the security of the Bitwarden network perimeter as well as penetration testing and vulnerability assessments against Bitwarden web services and applications. In August 2021, Bitwarden announced that network assessment (security assessment and penetration testing) for 2021 had been completed again by Insight Risk Consulting.{{cite web |date=2 August 2021 |title=Bitwarden 2020 and 2021 Security Audits are Complete|work=The Bitwarden Blog |url= https://bitwarden.com/blog/bitwarden-network-security-assessment-2020/ |url-status=live |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20220818191236/https://bitwarden.com/blog/bitwarden-network-security-assessment-2020/ |archive-date=18 August 2022}}

Reception
In January 2021, in its first password-protection program comparison, U.S. News & World Report selected Bitwarden as "Best Password Manager".{{Cite web |last=Kinney |first=Jeff |title=Best Password Managers of 2021 |date=12 January 2021 |work=U.S. News & World Report |url= https://www.usnews.com/360-reviews/password-managers |url-status=live |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20210115103910/https://www.usnews.com/360-reviews/password-managers |archive-date=15 January 2021}} A month later, with Bitwarden competitor LastPass about to remove a feature from its free version, CNet recommended Bitwarden as the best free app for password synchronization across multiple devices,{{Cite web |last=Broida |first=Rick |title=This is the best free password manager alternative to LastPass |work=CNet |url= https://www.cnet.com/news/this-is-the-best-free-password-manager-alternative-to-lastpass/ |access-date=17 February 2021}} while Lifehacker recommended it as "the best password manager for most people".{{cite web |last=Murphy |first=David |title=Bitwarden Is Now the Best Free Alternative to LastPass |date=18 February 2021 |work=Lifehacker |url= https://lifehacker.com/bitwarden-is-now-the-best-free-alternative-to-lastpass-1846289833 |access-date=19 February 2021}}

On 1 May, Bitwarden launched its own multi-factor authentication app, Bitwarden Authenticator.{{Cite web |date=2 May 2024 |title=Bitwarden launches its own free and open-source Authenticator app |access-date=19 May 2024 |work=Android Authority |url= https://www.androidauthority.com/bitwarden-authenticator-app-free-open-source-3439120/}} In October of that year, Bitwarden introduced changes to the dependencies of its desktop application to include a restricted-use SDK that may prevent some members of the public from compiling the application from source code, provoking concerns that Bitwarden is moving away from open-source principles.
