The genus was originally described by G. M. Thomson as "Boeckia",{{cite journal |author=V. H. Thomson |author-link=George M. Thomson |year=1882 |title=On the New Zealand Copepoda |journal=Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of New Zealand |volume=15 |pages=93–116 |url=http://rsnz.natlib.govt.nz/volume/rsnz_15/rsnz_15_00_001750.html}} That name proved, however, to be a junior homonym of Boeckia, a genus of Amphipoda, and so Jules de Guerne and Jules Richard provided it with the replacement name Boeckella in 1889.
