Etymology

There is some discussion as to where the name Boyan comes from. It is generally accepted that it is derived from the word бой- (boy-), which means "battle", and the suffix -ан (-an) which is common in Bulgarian and other Slavic names.{{cite web |url=http://www.purvite7.bg/articles/view/2227/sveti_machenik_boyan_knyaz_balgarski.html?rc=32 |title=Holy Martyr Boyan, Bulgarian Prince |date=4 January 2015 |publisher=Първите седем |language=bg |access-date=11 April 2015}}{{cite web |url=http://infopleven.com/%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%B5%D1%81-%D0%BF%D0%BE%D1%87%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BC%D0%B5-%D1%81%D0%B2-%D0%BC%D1%8A%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA-%D0%B1%D0%BE%D1%8F%D0%BD-%D0%B5%D0%BD%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%BE/ |title=Днес почитаме Св. мъченик Боян–Енравота |date=28 March 2015 |publisher=InfoPleven |language=bg |access-date=11 April 2015}} Together, Boyan (Боян) means "warrior" or "fighter".

Therefore, according to the Celtic origin of the name Bryan or Brian, the Slavic name Boyan or Bojan could have the meaning "strong" or "noble".
