History

The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1308, but it was not new at that time. The original church at Re was likely a wooden stave church located at Hetle, about {{convert|500|m}} northwest of the present church site. The first church here was likely built during the 13th century. In 1334, there was a fire in the church rectory. In 1620, the medieval church was torn down and replaced with a new timber-framed cruciform church. That building was poorly constructed, and it was replaced by a new cruciform church in 1667. In the 1880s, it was decided to tear down the old church so that a new, larger church could be built. It was also decided that the church should be moved a short distance to the southeast so that it would be more centrally located in the village. This new church was completed in 1886, the same year that the Breim parish was separated from Gloppen to become a separate municipality. The new church was consecrated on 9 July 1886 by Bishop Fredrik Waldemar Hvoslef. The old church was torn down in 1887. The new church was a wooden long church with a {{convert|22x15|m|adj=on}} nave and a {{convert|8.1x6|m|adj=on}} choir.{{Cite web |title=Re kirkested - Breim gamle - Hetle |url=http://www.kulturminnesok.no/kulturminnesok/kulturminne/?LOK_ID=223531 |publisher=Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage |language=Norwegian |accessdate=2019-11-07}}{{Cite web |title=Breim kyrkjestad / Breim kyrkje 4 |url=http://www.kulturminnesok.no/kulturminnesok/kulturminne/?LOK_ID=83947 |publisher=Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage |language=Norwegian |accessdate=2019-11-07}}{{Cite web |title=Breim kirke |url=https://www.norske-kirker.net/home/sogn-og-fjordane/breim-kirke/ |access-date=2021-08-28 |website=Norges-Kirker.no |language=Norwegian}}{{Cite web |last=Henden Aaraas |first=Margrethe |last2=Vengen |first2=Sigurd |last3=Gjerde |first3=Anders |title=Breim kyrkje |url=https://leksikon.fylkesarkivet.no/article/eaf6e680-4a43-4b86-bac7-e3593ed85270/ |publisher=Fylkesarkivet |language=Norwegian |accessdate=2021-08-28}}
