History
=Breville=
The company was established in 1932, by Bill O’Brien and Harry Norville, who combined their two surnames to form the company name. The company originally manufactured radios. During World War II, it made mine detectors. By 1953, the radio business had been taken over by A.W. Jackson Industries Pty. Ltd., which manufactured radiograms and, later, television sets under the Breville brand.{{cite web |url=https://www.radiomuseum.org/dsp_hersteller_detail.cfm?company_id=12436 |website=Radiomuseum |access-date=13 July 2019 |title=Precedent, brand of A.W. Jacksons Industries; Melbourne & Sydney}} In the 1960s, Breville turned its attention to manufacturing kitchen appliances.{{cite web|url=https://www.annualreports.com/HostedData/AnnualReports/PDF/ASX_BRG_2018.pdf|title=2018 Annual Report|access-date=2019-07-09}}
The O'Brien family continued developing the Breville business for three generations, with Bill's son, John, setting up the Breville Research and Development centre in the late 1960s, and his daughter, Barbara, running the marketing department throughout the 1990s. John O'Brien continued to lead many product development initiatives for the Breville brand until his death in December 2003. Breville's R&D team has taken out over 100 active patents and has been awarded more than 40 international design awards. In 1974, Breville released the toasted sandwich maker, which was a huge success, selling 400,000 units in its first year, and making the Breville brand a household name in Australia. Soon after this, the Breville toasted sandwich maker was launched in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where it was met with similar success.{{cite web|url=https://australianfoodtimeline.com.au/breville-snacknsandwich-maker/|website=Australian Food History|access-date=13 July 2019|title=1974 Breville Snack'n'Sandwich maker|date=21 September 1970 }}
