History

In 2013, the Department for Transport ordered 30 Class 801s to replace the same number of InterCity 225s on East Coast Main Line services.{{cite magazine |title=IEP order to replace Mark 4s |magazine=Today's Railways UK |issue=141 |date=September 2013 |page=8}} However after Virgin Trains East Coast was awarded the InterCity East Coast franchise in 2015 with a commitment to introduce extra services, some InterCity 225s were retained.{{cite magazine |title=Stagecoach/Virgin bid wins East Coast franchise |magazine=The Railway Magazine |issue=1366 |date=January 2015 |page=6}}{{cite magazine |title=VTEC's first HST in vinyl-based red enters traffic |magazine=Rail Magazine |issue=778 |date=8 July 2015 |page=30}}{{cite magazine |url=https://www.railwaygazette.com/passenger/vtec-and-firstgroup-granted-east-coast-main-line-access/42485.article |title=VTEC and FirstGroup granted East Coast Main Line access |magazine=Railway Gazette International |date=12 May 2016}}

In October 2020, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) issued a tender for 10 electro-diesel multiple units to replace its remaining InterCity 225s.{{cite magazine |last=Ford |first=Roger |title=LNER Procurement - Welcome to the '80s |department=Informed Sources |magazine=Modern Railways |volume=78 |issue=869 |date=February 2021 |page=26}} In November 2023, LNER placed an order with CAF for ten ten-carriage sets to be built on its Civity platform. The first two will be built in Spain, the other eight at Newport.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.railjournal.com/passenger/main-line/lner-orders-10-tri-mode-trains-from-caf/ |title=LNER orders 10 tri-mode trains from CAF |magazine=International Railway Journal |date=9 November 2023}}{{cite magazine |title=LNER CAF fleet to be Class 897 |magazine=Rail Express |issue=340 |date=September 2024 |page=14}}

The trains will be able to run on 25{{nbsp}}kV 50{{nbsp}}Hz electrification, battery and diesel power.{{Cite web |title=First Tri-Mode Long Distance Trains For The East Coast Main Line |url=https://www.lner.co.uk/news/first-tri-mode-long-distance-trains-for-east-coast-main-line/ |access-date=13 August 2024 |website=London North Eastern Railway}} They will be maintained at Neville Hill TMD.
